When planning a commercial space, sacrificing usable area is never an easy decision, especially in areas where unit prices are high. Most people tend to maximize display area by securing more circulation space in narrow areas.

However, the Coor Seongsu Flagship Store goes against this trend. The store demolished half of the second-floor slab and two-thirds of the fourth-floor slab, transforming the building into a unique structure that is two stories high but possesses the height of four stories.

After deeply contemplating how to guide visitors naturally and unconsciously to the upper spaces, the solution was derived: first, convey a sense of comfort through intuitive circulation design; second, consider the optimal ratio between space width and staircase height; and finally, ensure visitors have a pleasant experience upon reaching the top floor.

The challenge lies in determining the suspended elements within the voids of different-sized floor plates on each level. The first and second floors are connected to promote the intermingling of light and air, while retaining the structural traces of the floor slabs, beams, and columns. People will move freely between these elements. Imagine the clothes hanging on the racks seeming to float, with the ceilings of the second and third floors clearly visible. A new world is born through the sharing of vertical space. This might be the true meaning of a “consumption space.”
