Design Task: To renovate the existing chapel and build a new home for three generations on the remaining land, without affecting the location of the ancestral tomb. This project aims to transform the originally solemn and spiritual space into a warm, private, and livable home.

Design Solution:

1. The architecture resembles a "miniature park." The tomb in the center of the site is reinterpreted as the green core of the project, surrounded by multi-layered greenery. This open space becomes a shared outdoor area where adults can enjoy tea, exercise, or relax, while children have space to run, play, and explore.

2. Above the garden is a wide, surrounding balcony, which is the "territory" for the two children. The space flows seamlessly from the interior to the balcony, forming a continuous ring under the trees, like a large "playground."

3. Enhancing family connection: The public living space and the grandparents' room are on the ground floor for easy access to the worship space, the tomb, and the garden. With the garden gate open, the grandparents can observe and talk to their playing grandchildren at any time. The owners' space is located on the top floor to ensure privacy. Vertical circulation is carefully designed so that family members naturally pass through shared spaces, promoting daily interactions.

4. Optimizing limited space: The land depth is limited, with each floor area being about 40 square meters, but the setbacks are large—which increases the challenge of usable area. To avoid a cramped feeling and increase ventilation, the use of solid walls is minimized. Instead, wooden blocks define private spaces, while large glass panels are used to open up views to the garden and introduce natural light during the day. The roughness of the materials (volcanic stone, terrazzo, polished cement, etc.) combined with the dominant soft tones creates a feeling of coolness while enhancing the dignity of the project.

A new home on old land—filled with sunshine, breezes, children's laughter, the aroma of home-cooked meals, and the whispers of grandparents... in every corner of the house and garden. In this place, the cemetery, the incense, and the passing of the deceased are no longer so frightening and taboo, but have become a gentle and familiar part of daily life.
