From the architect. Isala Meppel breaks with the stereotype of hospitals. Vakwerk architects did not follow the conventional approach to hospital design, but took a holistic view, aiming to create a built environment that actively promotes patient health. The building makes full use of natural light and the surrounding landscape, resulting in an elegant yet approachable feel that resembles a wellness center more than a hospital. The carefully selected materials and surface textures create a warm atmosphere that makes users feel at home.

The hospital is located east of the small town of Meppel in the northeast of the Netherlands, near the Reestdal, an area characterized by meadows, farmlands, heathland, forests, estates, and large farms. The design brief included a 23,500 m² freestanding hospital, encompassing a 5,000 m² integrated rehabilitation center, both intended to merge with the surrounding landscape.

Our design goal was to create a user-friendly building while meeting the extensive functional demands of a hospital. It is intended to be a healing environment that inspires vitality, promotes health, and encourages movement: not only providing a comfortable workspace for employees but also improving the user experience and recovery rates for patients. Working in a workgroup with experts from medical backgrounds and discussing together helped us to better optimize workflows, and based on these discussions, we placed most of the functional spaces on the ground floor to ensure efficient operation of the building.

Since the building is mainly spread out horizontally, natural colors and materials are used on the facade, and the green roof design ensures that the hospital blends perfectly with the natural environment. The corrugated aluminum panels on the facade exhibit different light and shadow effects over time, making the building's exterior change with the time of day and the seasons. The protruding canopies emphasize the horizontality of the building while blocking solar radiation.

Vakwerk architects collaborated deeply with Komovo's placemakers to ensure that the external environment naturally extends into the interior. This spatial characteristic is also reflected in some interior details, such as the incorporation of brass-textured native leaf elements in the flooring, as if they were blown in by the wind; the projection of animals on the entrance hall wall that move with pedestrians; and the various decorative prints of flora and fauna on walls, windows, and curtains.

The hospital (Isala Diaconessenhuis) is not only highly innovative in its spatial organization and architectural expression but is also the first fully electric medical facility in the Netherlands. The roofs of the two higher volumes are covered with solar panels, and the building has a thermal storage system. Furthermore, the hospital shows maximum respect for its surroundings: the landscape is mainly shaped with native local vegetation, the existing storks continue to thrive here, and the green roof ensures biodiversity. Together, these elements result in a sustainable healthcare building where humans and nature coexist harmoniously.
