The Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, home to the Spanish football champion record holder Real Madrid, is a legend. Over the past decade, the stadium has been renovated and expanded according to a master plan concept, transforming its originally heterogeneous architectural structure into an innovative multi-functional arena. The stadium's capacity has increased by about 3,000 seats on top of the current approximately 80,000 seats. In the upper tier, a new platform will offer 240 VIP and hospitality lounges as well as over 1,600 additional seats. Most of the existing structure has been preserved and enclosed by a new continuous façade of stainless steel louvers. A mobile pitch allows for the flexible replacement of the turf with a solid ground platform for hosting events other than sports competitions. The retractable stadium roof facilitates flexible adaptation to various weather conditions. World superstar Taylor Swift held two concerts at the Bernabéu Stadium at the end of May, marking the debut of this multi-functional venue.

In 2014, gmp Architekten von Gerkan, Marg and Partners, in collaboration with L35 Arquitectos and Ribas & Ribas Architects, won first prize in the design competition for the renovation of the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid. First opened in 1947, the stadium has undergone several expansions and modifications over the years. The current design establishes a coherent overall concept for the first time, with the stadium volume covered by a continuous façade that integrates various functions, including the Real Madrid Museum and catering and retail areas. The "Skywalk" offers the opportunity to tour the stadium when there are no matches, making the Bernabéu a tourist attraction for Madrid in addition to its primary use.

The conversion work was carried out without interrupting matches. After winning the competition and following a lengthy planning and approval phase, the owner, Real Madrid, commissioned the Spanish construction company FCC as the general contractor, with construction starting in June 2019. During the pandemic, Real Madrid's home matches were played without spectators at the training center, meaning construction was uninterrupted by matches for two years. In May 2023, after the completion of the roof structure, the club’s home games resumed at the stadium under construction.

The geometry of the stadium shell follows the principles of "form-finding" and "shaping," taking functionality into account while aiming to give the stadium a new sculptural quality. The curved stainless steel louvers give the Bernabéu a completely new character, highlighting the charm of this Madrid landmark. The open setting of the metal components ensures natural ventilation inside the stadium. From a distance, the metal structure blends into the city like a sparkling jewel, reflecting daylight from different perspectives.
