The SAFRA Choa Chu Kang clubhouse, situated in the heart of a vast public park, is a recreational facility offering a wide array of fitness and wellness activities for national servicemen and their families, including swimming pools, five-a-side soccer pitches, karaoke rooms, and a spa. The architectural style of SAFRA CCK is assertive and distinct, drawing inspiration from fitness movements—from bold, oversized trusses to precast pigmented concrete arches symbolizing unity and strength. Beneath this robust exterior lies a vibrant natural and human community, flowing in from the park via a central main artery. The result is a seamless interweaving of nature and fitness, revitalizing the community spirit.

From the outset, the massing and programming were guided not only by the internal logic of hierarchy and purpose but also by external factors such as visual permeability and spatial connectivity. Located within the park, the clubhouse's design philosophy leverages its geographical position to foreground porous public spaces that seamlessly integrate surrounding greenery with the built structure. The building is intentionally oriented towards the park, drawing in the surrounding nature and activities to create a verdant central courtyard that channels the outdoors in. To further enhance permeability, the swimming pool is elevated into the tree canopy, freeing up the ground plane to connect with the park. This not only offers a commanding view of the park from above but also allows the pool to extend into the foliage, blending in perfectly with the leaves.

Adjacent to the courtyard, the 'Staircase of Life' acts as the vertical nucleus of the project, not only connecting the fitness amenities within the clubhouse but also linking the park’s running routes with the sky track on the fourth level. It embodies active mobility, inviting visitors to ascend 100 steps, thus breaking the conventional idea that fitness and parks are confined to the ground plane. Spanning different domains—public and private, horizontal and vertical—it injects the clubhouse with a unique verve and enthusiasm. The high-volume spaces are arranged along the building's outstretched arms to maximize natural light and cross-ventilation. In air-conditioned spaces, high-performance double-glazing is utilized to mitigate heat transfer, resulting in significant energy savings.

Beyond passive design strategies, SAFRA CCK optimizes energy consumption through green technologies and sustainable building practices. It features high-efficiency water-cooled chillers, a 100% smart automated irrigation system for rainwater harvesting in the landscape, rooftop photovoltaic panels, and energy-efficient lighting systems. During construction, green concrete and recycled steel were used, resulting in a 23% reduction in embodied carbon per square meter of construction. Due to an overall energy saving of 42.7%, totaling 1890 MWh, the project was awarded the Green Mark Platinum for Super Low Energy Building certification by the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) of Singapore. This recognition underscores the clubhouse's commitment to coexisting harmoniously with nature, highlighting its role as a thoughtful, sustainable space that prioritizes the well-being of its occupants in every aspect of its design and function.
