The renovation of the renowned Beekvliet gymnasium in Sint-Michielsgestel has been completed. Following the school's expansion, the circulation paths for students and teachers between classrooms and other areas have become more logical, with the sky-blue auditorium becoming the school's new center. The façade of the extension is enriched by a panoramic work by visual artist Ian Kirkpatrick; these murals interweave the stories of former students, passers-by, and board members with images of the future.

The Catholic secondary school Beekvliet in Sint-Michielsgestel has a long history spanning centuries: it originally served as a seminary for priests and, during the Second World War, as an internment camp for Dutch political detainees, including the first post-war prime minister, Wim Schermerhorn. In the 1970s, the school acquired new premises across the street and transformed into a modern grammar school. In 2016, MVRDV and Van Boven Architecten won the renovation competition for the building.

The starting point for the design was to renovate this secondary school to modernize the building from a sustainability perspective, including by extending its lifespan. At the same time, the design task also included creating more space for the school's regular activities and additional artistic and cultural facilities.

The design primarily involved the renovation of the existing building. This creates a challenging and inspiring learning environment for students, as well as spaces for meetings and interaction. In addition, a new auditorium was required in front of the teaching block. By extending and lowering the previous roof structure, the school's internal circulation is seamlessly enclosed, which also reflects the school's motto: "Beekvliet Stroomt" ("Beekvliet flows"). The new building houses the expanded auditorium with tiered seating, a kitchen, and a flexible stage. The main entrance remains in its pre-renovation location, only now situated beneath the new curved roof.

“It is a great honor to be allowed to renovate one's own old school,” says Winy Maas, founding partner at MVRDV. “Gijs, Theobert, and I asked ourselves: how can we make this grammar school fit the contemporary context without losing its sense of history? Ian’s artwork helped a lot with this. I like how his murals incorporate memories of past and present students. In fact, in this building, you see the shadow of everyone in the village. It is truly a portrait of the entire Sint-Michielsgestel and its surroundings. On the ceiling of the new entrance hall, there is a ‘compass’ pointing to the sources of the stories of the surrounding area.”

The artwork on the exterior walls, designed in collaboration with the renowned Canadian visual artist Ian Kirkpatrick, is a panoramic drawing depicting memories and experiences of current and former students, teachers, and board members. The drawing also references the surrounding environment and Beekvliet's history of over 200 years. These drawings therefore depict the school's origins and its connection to the outside world. The iconic illustrations give the building a contemporary look while integrating the building with its surroundings. The placement of the illustrations on the facade was determined using computer scripting techniques, with each illustration linked to its geographical location.
