From the architect. The SAFE Credit Union Performing Arts Center opened in 1976 as a professional venue in desperate need of modernization. The aging Brutalist building was visually opaque and disconnected from the surrounding urban fabric. With aging infrastructure, the building required a complete modernization to meet the rigorous demands of contemporary performance and present a new face to the public.

The renovation and expansion open the building to the surrounding urban environment and bring Sacramento’s rich tree culture inside. The new lobby connects directly to the sidewalk, offering passersby a glimpse inside and showcasing the magic of the arts as a community resource. At night, the glowing lobby becomes a beacon, anchoring a visual focus for the nearby pedestrian street.

The use of transparent materials contrasts sharply with the opaque concrete of the original facade, creating a welcoming atmosphere from the pedestrian’s perspective. A lace-like screen, which filters dappled light like a tree canopy, wraps the formal south lobby and extends north to shelter an outdoor activity space for open-air events, park movie nights, or a community living room. Major renovations to the auditorium and orchestra pit included the installation of California's largest electro-acoustic enhancement system, transforming the acoustically poor and visually chaotic interior into a warm and acoustically superior performance venue.

The design takes a holistic view, employing the concept of dappled light throughout the building structure, sun-shading devices, interior materials, and lighting design, echoing the landscape of the botanical garden across the street. The shading strategy reduces heat gain and glare while maximizing daylight and expanding views. The reimagined venue is more inclusive and closer to the community it serves, adding a new small performance venue to provide a platform for local artists to show and exchange. The renovated auditorium achieves barrier-free coverage of viewing lines and universal access to the auditory experience.
