Does every everyday object possess an invisible tongue? The tongue of a column, the tongue of a window, the tongue of a flowerbed—each silently perceives and tastes the space in its own way. The dampness of wet grass after rain, the freshness of a light breeze, the instant crackle of popping candy, the creamy texture of melting cheese, all transform into moments of synesthesia that extend the boundaries of taste, reminding us: taste may not be confined to the human tongue.

At the 2025 International Architecture Festival in Montpellier, France, themed "Gourmandise," Studio Deng, as one of the winning competition teams, was invited to design an installation intervention for the courtyard of the Hôtel de Rozel. This compact residential courtyard, enclosed by historical stone walls, required a design approach that could inspire perception and participation without disrupting its scale and atmosphere. Based on the concept of the "invisible tongue," Studio Deng proposed that every everyday object might store its unique "taste memory." The installation, "Tongue of Taste," materializes this concept, making the tongue of the window visible in the space.

A metal tongue hangs down from the windowsill, extending to the center of the courtyard, its end slightly upturned to meet the entrance axis. The surface of the tongue is made of mirrored stainless steel, capturing changes in light, weather, and activities within the courtyard. Growing on it are 130 pink papillae, inspired by microscopic images of real taste buds, made from pink felt originally used for hamster nests. Each soft and playful form symbolizes the four basic tastes—sweet, sour, bitter, and salty—and can be touched and further shaped, while also stimulating association.

"Tongue of Taste" invites visitors to select their own papillae to insert onto the metal tongue surface, tasting the space with their bodies. Thus, viewers enrich the installation's taste map in their own ways—children bend the papillae into new shapes, residents revisit repeatedly to observe changes, and strangers share the flavors they have added. These spontaneous actions transform the courtyard into a playful public space for communication during its week of opening.

After the architecture festival, the installation was moved to the inner hall of a 14th-century monastery in Avignon, France, to continue exploring the response of the "invisible tongue" in the context of historical architecture during Architecture en Fête. After both exhibitions, all pink felt components and mirrored metal sheets were donated to the charity organization Children’s Relay for use as art education materials, allowing the journey of the tongue to continue within the community.
