Le Penhuel Architectes & Associés has completed the construction of the Simone Veil school complex in Tremblay-en-France. This facility embodies the firm's philosophy of sustainably transforming educational spaces in response to the climate emergency. This innovative project rejects standardized design to reinterpret the concept of the "school building," and was honored this November with the 2025 Équerre d'argent Prize.

The municipality's proposal aimed to replace the traditional concept of a "leisure center"—used to welcome children outside of class hours—with expanded classrooms and common areas. Consequently, all school areas are now shared by students and preschool children alike. The goal was to create a more spacious, comfortable, and modular facility while maintaining the same built area.

Shared Common Areas

The school’s hall is centrally located within the institution, running north-south to serve the entire school down to the playground. It is designed not just as a simple common area, but as a real living space conducive to various forms of learning and exchange. Three differently arranged niches add possibilities for use, encouraging and supporting diverse learning methods.

The classroom street runs east-west throughout the facility, forming the other structural axis of the school. This axis is divided in two by an internal activity area, with four classrooms and a courtyard in each section. At the entrance to each classroom, there is a vestibule/cloakroom with play structures usable for teaching or recreation.

At the intersection of the two axes that structure the school, a large internal activity area serves as the true heart of the building, multiplying usage possibilities. This multi-purpose space, in addition to welcoming preschool children in the morning and evening, can be used with the multi-purpose hall and the motor skills room. It supplements the outdoor playground during heavy rain and can also host exhibitions and performances.

Versatile Classrooms

The dual-aspect classrooms benefit from multiple sources of natural light and good ventilation. Located between the northern courtyard and the southern school playground, they ensure different atmospheres within the same teaching room. To the north, light streams in through the courtyard, with a wooden shared space between two classrooms creating a calm and peaceful area. To the south, the spaces directly overlooking the playground are more open and collective. Each classroom also benefits from a "private" activity area overlooking the "public" playground.

This shaded area improves the flow between inside and out, becoming a true extension of the classroom. The playground, shaded by a line of trees to the south, is shared by nursery and primary classes. It is a genuine green environment, ideal for exploring nature and outdoor play. The space specifically designed for biodiversity on the roof completes the external facilities. It includes containers for growing vegetables and large picnic tables to facilitate teaching activities related to the natural world. Finally, the sports field will also be open during breaks to encourage physical activity.

Respecting the Environment

By definition, school buildings must demonstrate their commitment to the environment. This principle is reflected both in the choice of materials and the building's functions. The school's load-bearing stone facade comes from the Bonneuil-en-Valois quarry, less than 60 km from the site. Its thickness ensures the building's insulation while enhancing the value of the facility's sculptural volume. Between the classrooms, earth blocks are added to the wooden structure, increasing the visibility of natural and bio-sourced materials in the building.

The courtyards punctuate the common areas, allowing all spaces in the project to benefit from good natural light, fresh air, and comfortable humidity. Their layout naturally ventilates all areas designed for children, as well as the common areas, making them true living and learning spaces. The roof of the sports area is equipped with photovoltaic panels, generating more energy than the building consumes. The remaining roofs are vegetated, improving thermal performance and total rainwater retention, while also offering a pleasant view for surrounding residents.
