From the architect. The Webster's latest flagship store in Los Angeles is a brand new, 11,000 square foot retail building adjacent to the historic Los Angeles Beverly Center. Beneath this eight-story monolith, The Webster flagship elegantly showcases its sculptural form, offering a distinct experience in contrast to the Beverly Center's retail environment. The cantilevered concrete facade borrows from and reinterprets the existing building's Brutalist shell, infused with pink dye—a tribute to Californian brilliance, where Pacific light naturally amplifies saturated colors.

“Over the past five years, I’ve started using saturated reds and pinks heavily, harkening back to color experiments I did early in my career. Pink feels synonymous with fashion to me, but I wanted to create something that felt both hard and soft,” says Sir David Adjaye OBE.

The Webster flagship occupies space that was formerly allocated to interior retail, creating a new public space at the intersection of San Vincente Boulevard and Beverly Boulevard. This new public space features a digital art wall and a sculptural fountain, creating an unexpected urban oasis. Visible only from beneath the cantilevered structure, the digital art wall offers a vast surface area, forming a column-free portico complete with bench seating. In homage to—and subversion of—Hollywood’s exaggerated digital culture, the art wall is intentionally designed at a low resolution of 1472 pixels wide by 20 pixels high; it is a sculptural canvas that will premiere artworks commissioned by The Webster.

At the main entrance, a panoramic window made of three curved glass panes forms a distinct visual entry, blurring the boundary between the public space and the interior retail area. The exterior color and material palette of The Webster carries through to the interior, where the design concept is considered a morphological landscape for display and inhabitation.

The interior spaces sway between various concrete textures and types, reminiscent of a sculptural field, punctuated by in-situ cast concrete columns and teardrop-shaped plinths that create a series of vignettes for the curated merchandise. Fragments of black cherry marble are embedded in the floor concrete.

Bronze-framed mirrors and display shelves adorn the surrounding walls. These interior fittings express an appreciation for the sculptural beauty of the store’s fluid form without distracting from the products on display. The upper walls of the fitting rooms are softened with vintage 1950s wallpaper sourced from the client’s personal collection.
