The project is located on a property in Resende, in the Douro Barro region, an area renowned for its vineyard landscapes. This property contains several buildings that required renovation. The plan aimed to restore one of these structures into a holiday home. During the survey, we discovered a ruin: an old granite wall was the only element that had survived the test of time.

For centuries, humans have shaped this landscape, creating breathtaking beauty by building granite walls to carve out terraces and flat areas for planting vines. However, within this magnificent scenery, buildings often felt out of place.

The project revolves around a concrete volume, an abstract element derived from the outline of the old farmhouse, combined with an underground building design. The interaction between these two structures creates new interstitial spaces and areas, exploring the concept of indoor and outdoor, transforming the granite wall into an element that encloses a garden.

During construction, the emergence of a granite outcrop led us to modify the design, abandoning part of the original underground building concept. The building volume separates from the natural boundary, creating more enclosed spaces. The stained pink concrete establishes a new connection with the surroundings. The use of this color is drawn from the color tradition of the numerous surrounding buildings, complementing the green of the vineyards.

The house has two floors. The social areas (including the kitchen and living room) are on the ground floor, while the upper floor houses three bedrooms and a library. In the open space between the building volumes, trees and climbing plants will grow naturally, marking the change of seasons and regulating the variations in natural light.
