The international architectural firm Alvisi Kirimoto, commissioned by the Parco Archeologico del Colosseo, has designed a new exhibition pathway for the Basilica di Massenzio. This project fully respects the immense historical and cultural value of the site, skillfully and purposefully integrating itself into one of the world's most extraordinary locations. Despite its distinctly modern design language, this renovation engages in a meaningful dialogue with the ruins, redefining its identity and introducing new functions. The project meticulously seeks a balance between historical memory and modernity, offering a profound reinterpretation of the space.

The stage is the focal point of this transformation, an intervention that goes beyond mere scenography to become a genuine cultural vehicle. It activates a system of interaction between the monumental architecture, the visitors, and the activities that breathe life into the space. Located in the central hall, the stage re-establishes the transverse connections between the three side aisles of the nave, no longer obstructed by the existing steel structure. It functions not only as an architectural backdrop but also as a dynamic platform for hosting events such as theatrical performances, film screenings, and conferences, offering visitors a unique and engaging perspective on the magnificent ruins of the Basilica. It also serves as an exceptional vantage point to appreciate the structure's splendid architectural details.

“The new stage is a multifunctional renovation designed for large cultural events, strictly respecting the historical and cultural value of the Basilica. It is a modern element, clearly recognizable yet subtly integrated into the essence of the structure, offering a solution that combines practicality with the enhancement of a monumental building,” stated Massimo Alvisi, co-founder of Alvisi Kirimoto.

The stage is accessible from all four sides, versatile, and inclusive. It features tiered seating on the front side offering views of the Horti Farnesiani, while ramps and stairs on the sides facilitate movement between the various aisles. A second set of stairs on the north side leads to the semicircular apse, allowing visitors to closely examine the architectural fragments. An integrated lighting system and painted steel railings ensure safety and comfort, while two benches flanking the stage offer visitors moments of pause and contemplation during guided tours. The stage is adjacent to an area temporarily designated as a dressing room and features a new stage exit, greatly streamlining backstage operations, allowing set design and technical preparations to proceed smoothly without disturbing the visitor experience.

The stage is built using a modular system, combining a steel frame with Keller steel grating platforms. Its surface is clad in birch plywood, punctuated by regularly spaced wooden slats that become denser towards the center—cleverly directing the gaze inward, subtly guiding visitors' attention to the core of the stage design, and thereby anchoring the focus onto the magnificent architecture of the Basilica. The renovation scope also extends to the church's forecourt, where the ground has been re-paved with a mixture of natural earth and lime, and metal informational display columns equipped with audiovisual systems have been installed to deepen visitors' understanding of the monumental structure.
