The Sapphire Coast of Australia—stretching from Bermagui in New South Wales towards the Victorian border—is committed to expanding its cultural offerings to benefit the local creative community while simultaneously boosting tourism. As part of this vision, the Bega Valley Regional Gallery was expanded, increasing its function as a cultural hub and community venue through the integration of 500 square meters of exhibition space, an archive, storage, workshops, and a new external facade.

The newly added roof features south-facing skylights, significantly increasing the gallery's internal volume and introducing soft, diffused natural light, which reduces the reliance on artificial lighting. Furthermore, the inclusion of professional archival facilities and climate control systems equips the gallery to host national and international touring exhibitions.

In collaboration with various arts and cultural user groups, the concept of opening up the existing institution to strengthen connections with the broader community became a key driver for the design approach. To this end, meetings were organized with stakeholders and key user groups to ensure all design requirements were met and that unique spatial utilization issues were appropriately addressed. The Sibling design team collaborated with representatives from regional arts organizations, Aboriginal groups, and the adjacent library and administrative offices.

By enveloping the existing building with a new facade and adding volume, the design team successfully mediated the relationship between the cultural activities within the gallery and the public life of Bega’s town center. The new workshop space overlooks the reception area and offices, while large framed windows—accessible from the exterior, interspersed within the textured steel mesh facade—serve as display windows for exhibitions, extending the gallery content from the interior out to the surrounding municipal forecourt.

The gallery's new windows are oriented toward significant surrounding landscapes: visitors can pause from viewing art to take in views of Mount Biamanga (also known as Mumbulla Mountain) in the distance, or observe the public life unfolding in the town gardens across the street.

In addition to the gallery expansion, the adjacent public forecourt underwent redevelopment. This key civic space had its community usability enhanced through the addition of shading structures, soft landscaping, and urban furniture. The landscape design proceeded concurrently with the gallery design, complementing each other to introduce more amenities to the forecourt. The existing forecourt lawn was planted with new native flora and trees, which are also continued in new garden beds along the edges of the building and the forecourt, bringing a touch of nature to the urban environment.
