From the architect. Solum is a space and landscape installation aimed at raising awareness about the importance of soil permeability in water cycle management.

The work, located on the site of an old well in Luxembourg City, focuses on demonstrating how living organisms gradually restore inert soil, thereby recovering its porosity, which is essential for combating both drought and floods.

The layered installation superimposes a belt of reeds onto columns of Luxembourg sandstone, symbolizing wetlands, while sandstone is the stone that forms the largest aquifer in Luxembourg. The final result is an ancient and primitive landscape that complements the natural environment of the site.

Based on the lush vegetation on the site and its aesthetic and functional dynamics, the project reflects the restoration of vegetation after human activity. This diverse community of plants grows naturally without human intervention or watering, making them undoubtedly the most adapted to the soil and climatic conditions of the site.

The landscape work aims to support this community of plants by increasing the density of the shrub layer, planting annual wild perennials in nitrogen-rich soils, and grasses and annuals in dry soils.
