Game on! The new sports hall at Erasmus University Rotterdam is a place for training and competition; a place for approximately 11,000 students, colleagues, and top athletes to exercise and play team sports. The sports building marks the entrance to the Woudestein campus. While respecting the campus layout, we arranged all sports facilities on a compact plot, organizing them into stacked 'sports boxes'. These boxes form two volumes, slightly offset from each other, connected by a public core.

This public area connects functions, sports, and athletes, as well as the two sides of the campus. As Manfred Wansink, Architect and Partner & Director at VenhoevenCS, mentions: “The walkways inside are truly a physical and social connecting point. Bright, high, with stairs and footpaths, lots of greenery, and of course a bar. From here, the scenes presented by these sports students encourage participation”.

Transparency and rhythm. The sports hall is wrapped in a skin of glass and aluminum, where horizontal connections and vertical fins interact in multiple rhythms.

The slightly curved east façade of the sports hall opens up with a full-height glass corner. Furthermore, both ends of the central corridor are pure glass. This transparency maximizes views, achieves a smooth transition between inside and outside, and allows daylight to penetrate. It also marks the lively locations: public spaces above the street and sports activities that do not require enclosed halls.

Rebuilding the ecosystem. Due to the ambitions of VenhoevenCS and Erasmus University in the field of sustainability and energy consumption, the building achieves the increasingly demanded energy balance. It incorporates full facilities to capture, retain, exchange, and reuse water and solar energy, and to minimize its use. These are major design principles for all VenhoevenCS designs, just like the Aquatics Centre for Paris 2024 and the new stadium in Lokeren (BE, 2023). Furthermore, we shaped the public interior spaces with building materials harvested from circular demolitions.

For example, metal plates obtained from a former juvenile detention center in Zeist, the Netherlands, are used here as ceilings, and we gave the 1100 m² wooden floor from the Eindhoven University of Technology pavilion a new life. They are used here as façade panels for the interior walkways. By emphasizing this reuse, our aim is to engage society and inspire the student community to contribute to the circular economy.
