结构美学与机电系统的有机整合:从纯粹的建筑工程角度看,该项目在结构设计上实现了高度的复杂性和美观性。通过精心布局的分叉型门式桁架和王柱桁架系统,配合双层胶合层压顶索,成功地在结构件之间创造了“间隙空间”(Service Gaps)。这一创新策略使得复杂的机械和电气系统得以隐藏,保证了外露木结构的纯净诗意美感。同时,结构系统也支撑起了富有表现力的悬挑屋顶,为观众提供了遮蔽和观景平台,实现了结构效率、技术隐藏与空间体验的完美统一。

The multi-functional University of Idaho Central Credit Union (ICCU) Arena, with a seating capacity of 4,000, is intended to be a compelling gateway to the University of Idaho campus. Its design is inspired by the rolling landscape of the Palouse region, shaped by the massive Missoula Floods at the end of the last Ice Age. This building serves as the home for the university's basketball program and a gathering place for various events such as sporting events, concerts, assemblies, and campus programs.

The new ICCU Arena creates an intimate spectator experience, showcases the unique character of its region, and presents a profound connection to sustainable natural resources. The arena makes extensive use of wood and is filled with ample natural light, creating a stark contrast with traditional stadiums built with steel and concrete. The ICCU Arena aims to innovate in sustainable wood design in collaboration with partners in the local forestry and wood products industries.
全新的 ICCU 体育馆打造了紧密的观众体验,展示了其所在地区独到的特征,并呈现了与可持续自然资源的深刻联系。体育馆中使用了大量的木材,并让内部空间充满足量的自然光照,以此让这一建筑与由钢及混凝土打造的传统运动场形成了鲜明对比。ICCU 体育馆意在通过与该地区林业、木制品业的合作伙伴协同,共同在可持续木制设计中进行创新。

The project's form and material expression construct a sense of place rooted in Idaho's history while showcasing futurist advancement. It is a place intended to celebrate athletic achievements and simultaneously serves as a tailored learning laboratory for the university's students in forestry and engineering. By innovatively utilizing locally harvested timber, the ICCU Arena creates large-span glulam trusses and dowel-laminated timber (DLT) structural elements, thereby acting as a catalyst for the university's educational mission.

The arena roof "floats" above the west entry porch, extending backward and splitting into two sections to create a multi-layered, isometrically undulating shell above the north concourse, thus evoking the sinuous contours of the Palouse hills. The roof extends softly to the east, gently enveloping the practice court vertically and connecting directly to the ground. Furthermore, the expressive glulam structure supports the interior walls on the exterior façade of the arena.
体育馆屋顶“悬浮”在西入口门廊上方、向后延伸、并分成两部分以在北侧大厅上方构建多层次的等距分隔起伏壳体,由此援引帕卢斯地区蜿蜒起伏的山丘轮廓。屋顶连绵延伸至东侧,轻柔地在垂直方向环抱着练习场,并与地面直接相连。并且体育馆外侧墙内壁则由富有表现力的胶合层压架构支撑。

The undulating texture of the charcoal-stained cedar walls contrasts with the building's "silky" pre-engineered beams, echoing the forms of early farm structures in the region. Open gaps between the roof panels are filled with translucent glass, introducing diffused natural light throughout the performance venue. Full-height glass curtain walls between the wooden structure also provide excellent views of the interior activities and the exterior landscape. Additionally, the exposed, undulating Douglas fir roof structure creates a warm and inclusive experience for both athletes and spectators.
炭染雪松木墙起伏的纹理与建筑“丝滑”的预制梁并置,由此回呼应这一地区早期的农庄架构形式。屋顶面板间开敞的缝隙则由半透明的玻璃填充,由此为整个表演场地引入了漫射的自然光,同时,木制架构间的全高玻璃幕墙也提供了可以观看内部活动、欣赏外部景观的绝佳视野。此外,外露、起伏的花旗松屋顶结构也为运动员及观众们创造了一种温暖、包容的体验感。

To achieve the poetic beauty of the timber structure, mechanical and electrical systems had to be integrated within the structure. The main structures consist of bifurcated portal trusses and repetitive king post truss systems. The portal and king post truss systems are combined with a double-layer glulam tension tie design, creating 'service gaps' between the structures where the building can establish a 'facility highway' to conceal M&E components. On the west side of the arena, utility functions are hidden behind the soffit and combined with spaces such as the athletic department offices, locker rooms, and the alumni center, creating special event spaces on the upper level overlooking the main court. On the west side of the arena, spectators can experience the Vanderel Terrace sheltered by the robust cantilevered roof from rain and snow, while enjoying the views of the rolling Palouse hills, thus experiencing a venue atmosphere and community experience with a complete cycle.
