After three years of construction, the Drusus Stadium in the city centre of Bolzano has been refurbished, remodelled, and upgraded. Following a competition, the project was realised in close collaboration by the architects Dejaco+ Partner from Brixen working with gmp and Bergmeister Consulting Engineers from Vahrn. The design was jointly developed by Meinhard von Gerkan and Stephan Schütz together with Ralf Dejaco.

The Province of South Tyrol and the City of Bolzano have invested around 15 million euros in the project to adapt the stadium, which was built in 1936, to the requirements of professional football today. It is used as the home ground for FC Südtirol, which, although based in Bolzano, is considered to represent all of South Tyrol and successfully moved up to Italy’s second league a year ago.

In order to meet the standards for Serie B, the stadium had to be thoroughly overhauled. In the initial phase of construction, the first step was to refurbish the stadium and increase the number of seats from 3,100 to 5,500. To achieve this, both grandstands were lengthened and extended towards the pitch, preserving as much of the historic Drusus Stadium as possible. New, however, is the pitch with heated natural turf, a requirement of the Lega Calcio that makes it usable during the winter months as well.

The “Zanvettor” grandstand, built behind the stadium’s main gate, is a purist new building. It is being preserved as a historical structure. The monumental entrance is carefully integrated into a fair-faced concrete plinth and covered with a roof structure using steel lattice girders. The space beneath the grandstand is being used for all facilities related to Serie B matches. These include better-equipped changing rooms for the teams, a press room, and a new press workspace facing the pitch. The historic entrance provides access to the fan shop and canteen, which can also be used when there are no matches. The administrative premises required for the effective management of the stadium are located on the upper level.

The “Canazza” grandstand opposite the Zanvettor is narrower and lower; its characteristic vaulted concrete shell roof has been preserved and extensively renovated, and extended to the left and right with simpler roof structures to match the Zanvettor grandstand. Plans are in place for future additions of grandstands in the north and south with a capacity of up to 10,000 spectators. Matching the Zanvettor and Canazza grandstands, a modular structural system has been developed, which allows for the simple execution of a second construction phase.
