Verstas Architects

The Lapland Central Hospital was originally built in the 1980s and designed by Reino Koivula, one of Finland's most renowned hospital architects. This expansion project will double the existing building area of the hospital, including emergency outpatient department, observation ward, operating room, psychiatric ward, and several auxiliary facilities. The expansion project has created conditions for extensive operational collaboration, making the hospital park a more integrated and efficient whole.

The newly built hospital and parking building are located on the east side of the existing hospital. The entrance canopy and internal wooden surface create a warm and charming atmosphere. The psychiatric hospital is located on the west side of the central hospital building. Its ward and outdoor yard are located next to a small forest, introducing nature into the healing process. Patients are the center, and good customer experience, safe and effective treatment, and employee well-being are key goals.

The architectural style of the new building is consistent and recognizable. The main facade material of the psychiatric hospital is translucent wood, while the hospital's facade is characterized by white concrete and aluminum. Vertical thin plates and ground cantilever structures provide weather protection and reduce the need for mechanical cooling. The modular facade solution allows for flexible placement of spaces of various sizes along the facade, thereby supporting internal adaptability.

The revised layout of the hospital campus is based on creating a new east-west internal connection as the unified backbone of space and functionality for the plan. The building conveys humanitarianism and patient-centered care, while evoking people's impressions of Lapland's nature. Materials, spatial solutions, and natural light create a safe and healing environment, providing effective treatment for patients and health services for employees. The implementation of public artworks in the hospital campus has made the surrounding environment vibrant and promoted the recovery of patients.
