Current situation and limitations
The original site is located in the center of Chaishan Island. It was a primary school built 20 years ago and was converted into a temporary nursing home 4 years ago. However, the facilities are rudimentary and the occupancy rate is extremely low.. There were many limiting factors before the renovation, and terrain factors led to significant height differences inside and outside the site; Public areas are narrow and difficult to meet activity needs; The south facing public corridor in the elderly's living room exacerbates the drawbacks of lack of light and humidity. These defects reduce the value of using nursing homes and are not conducive to elderly residents' living. Therefore, renovation not only requires repairing buildings, but also involves spatial reconstruction.

Memory Tracing
Chaishan Island is naturally primitive, with quaint small houses surrounded by mountains and embracing the sea.. During the on-site investigation, it was found that most of these elderly people are fishermen who rely on the sea for food. The design inspiration for the daycare center comes from fishing boats. The bottom surface of its end shape is treated with curved surfaces and overhangs, making the overall image more vivid, like a boat "floating" on an island. To touch the emotions and sensory experiences of the elderly, awaken their youthful memories, and convey the story of Chaishan Island through architecture as a medium.

The two colors of red and blue, which have the imprint of the island residents' facades, are used on the bedroom facades and windowsills, and are also interspersed in the form of painted wooden boards in traffic spaces and outdoor ramps. The main building material is washed stone paint, the entrance wall is made of rough stone, and the corridor is made of steel columns, creating a contrast between light and heavy, echoing the local architectural atmosphere.

Maximizing public space and making it three-dimensional
The renovation aims to expand gathering public spaces, meet the social needs of the elderly, and reduce feelings of loneliness.. After the renovation, the first floor space will serve all public functions and be open to all residents on the island, including end-of-life care rooms, shared canteens, kitchens, and multifunctional halls. Set up a multi-level rooftop terrace, connecting the first floor courtyard and terrace with a ramp to provide ample outdoor activity space. At the same time, preserve the original terrace and connect the low-lying terrace on the west side with external roads to ensure unobstructed traffic. In addition, tea rooms and skylights have been added to the roof space, enriching the activity and functionality of the roof, providing better views and recreational space.

Transformation of medical and elderly care spaces
In response to the problems of uneven layout and poor functional compatibility in building spaces, multi-functional integration is achieved through regional division to optimize the layout of medical and elderly care spaces.. Adjust the corridors and stairs of the original second floor residential area to the shaded side and leave the sunny side for the elderly to live in, in order to improve lighting, ventilation, and visibility.

The project emphasizes aging friendly design details, renovating the mobile staircase to the center of the site, and configuring elevators to solve the problem of elderly people going up and down stairs. All staircase steps should be relaxed and slowed down, handrails and accessible pathways should be added to improve site accessibility. Update nursing beds and emergency equipment, improve bathroom layout, enhance compliance with indoor accessibility facilities, and replace non slip floor tiles to improve safety.
