Two years after the completion of the Munk Museum in Oslo, Estudio Herreros completed a small architectural manifesto project called "Trosten" in the same city. This is a floating sauna, commissioned by the non-profit Oslo Sauna Association with the vision of 'bringing steam to people'. The project follows the architectural tradition and presents a striking volume with strong color elements. As a place for individuals or the public to use, it provides a place for contemplation and gaze next to the Munch Museum. The building includes a steam room and a terrace directly leading to the sea, as well as an open-air theater facing the fjord, which can be used for hosting small events.

This building achieves sustainable design through an ambitious energy system, ensuring continuous heating at all levels; And choose environmentally responsible materials as much as possible, including the use of natural and recycled materials; It is also the first accessible universal sauna, and its steam circulation system allows wheelchair users to easily enter from the lower level of the stairs, reflecting social inclusiveness.

This volume is located at the mouth of the Okselva River and is the most prominent among a series of floating saunas designed by different architects. These saunas blurred the boundary between land and fjord waters. After the disappearance of the harbor promenade formed by the historic container terminal, these floating saunas reorganized into the current 7-kilometer public space, serving as paths for walking, jogging, and cycling, as well as beach rest, sunbathing areas, and year-round active swimming platforms.

Trosten is a building tool that slows down time, a place to observe a city and its ecology and connect it with reality and ideals beyond health practices. Its name in Norwegian corresponds to the annual migration of the thrush between Spain and Nordic countries, and its arrival is said to signify a good omen. Architecture affects a range of global issues, and we cannot miss any opportunity to convey a signal to protect this fragile planet to everyone.

This project has important experimental components, starting from assembling wooden structures in a dry dock on the outskirts of the city, then installing them on a precast concrete floating platform, and finally completing the enclosure and interior decoration. Dragging and fixing to the destination completes a cycle, avoiding disturbing the daily tranquility of the sauna area. On the other hand, the project provides thermal inertia for the overall building by using certified wood, recycling and reusing aluminum waste on facades, and using large terrazzo tiles certified with green labels, which helps reduce carbon emissions and environmental impact.
