The Chahar School project in Schalke stems from a dual vision: to transform a 1970s school building into an energy-saving demonstration project, and to reshape the playground into a green educational space.

The school building was originally a compact but uninsulated structure and has never been renovated. For many years, its outdated facade and outdated technological systems have been unable to meet current comfort and sustainability standards. Therefore, the project kicked off with a thorough and meticulous renovation: wrapping the existing building with a new energy-saving "outer layer" composed of prefabricated insulation boards.
该校舍原为紧凑但未做隔热处理的结构,且从未进行过翻新。多年来,其老旧的外立面和过时的技术系统已无法满足当下的舒适度与可持续性标准。因此,项目以一场彻底而精细的改造拉开序幕:为既有建筑包裹一层由预制保温板构成的新型节能“外衣”。

This strategy preserves the original structure while giving it new vitality. The new facade on the street facing side is partially enclosed to enhance insulation performance while still ensuring sufficient natural lighting in the corridor; On one side of the courtyard, there is a large opening, creating a bright and transparent classroom and office space. Indoors, outdated facilities are replaced by efficient and sustainable systems: LED lighting, dual flow ventilation, low-carbon heating, and acoustic optimization.
这一策略既保留了原始结构,又赋予其新生。临街一侧的新立面部分封闭,以提升保温性能,同时仍确保走廊自然采光充足;庭院一侧则大幅敞开,营造出明亮通透的教室与办公空间。室内,过时的设施被高效可持续的系统所取代:LED 照明、双流通风、低碳供暖及声学优化。

At the same time, the campus site has been re planned as a core component of the project. The once closed and monotonous hard ground has now become a permeable, green, and multifunctional space. Rainwater is managed through open channels and rain gardens, allowing children to intuitively experience the presence of water; The creation of native plants and habitats promotes biodiversity. The playground is both a leisure place and an outdoor classroom, where students can learn about plants, soil, and water cycling through direct contact with nature.
与此同时,校园场地被重新规划为项目的核心组成部分。曾经封闭单调的硬质地面,如今变为透水、绿化且功能多样的空间。雨水通过明渠与雨水花园管理,让儿童直观感受水的存在;本土植物与栖息地的营造促进了生物多样性。操场既是休闲场所,也是户外课堂,学生可通过与自然的直接接触学习植物、土壤与水循环知识。

There are various forms of amusement: structured areas such as sports fields and game mounds, as well as free exploration spaces composed of rocks, tree trunks, and shaded gardens. These elements collectively provide diverse experiences, stimulating physical activity, imagination, and social interaction.

The renovation project of Chazhar School demonstrates how energy transformation and landscape reshaping complement each other. The project implements a circular concept by restricting the demolition and reuse of existing structures and using prefabricated components; Transforming campus spaces into ecological educational living spaces enhances the daily experience of teachers and students. This is not only a renovation project, but also proposes a model: a school that is both efficient and energy-saving, and deeply integrated with the environment.
