The building is located at the intersection of 33rd Street and Charles Street, at the intersection of the Homewood campus and surrounding communities. Its design adopts a series of stacked and staggered heavy-duty wooden building blocks, paired with a flat cantilevered roof. Nearly 1000 photovoltaic panels are installed on the roof, which can meet about half of the building's electricity needs. The resulting "village" consisting of 29 pavilions cleverly integrates into the 30 foot slope of the site, achieving direct access to four levels of space while maintaining a pleasant spatial scale while improving accessibility. Inside the building, exposed wooden columns are connected to the ceiling through a large glass curtain wall, allowing natural light to shine in all directions and allowing passersby to glimpse the colorful picture of student life inside.

Bjarke Ingels, founder and creative director of BIG Architecture, said, "In the past, student activities at Johns Hopkins University were scattered everywhere, but now they are concentrated in the Bloomberg Student Center - a 'village' made up of wooden pavilions built on a natural hill on the edge of the university. The core area of the center is located under the solar panel roof, which is a year-round, layered gathering space for students to engage in social, creative, and other non academic activities. The heavy-duty wooden structure not only significantly reduces the implicit carbon footprint of the building, but also creates a warm, pleasant, and relaxed atmosphere

The Student Center is a fully functional lifestyle hub that revolves around and supports academic research, providing a range of crucial non academic services covering collaborative communication, dining and leisure, social interaction, creative creation, and performance exhibitions. The unique structural grid of the building provides a layout basis to meet various functional requirements. Surrounding the central public staircase, there are lounges and multifunctional halls that can host student exhibitions, community meetings, games and entertainment, health and wellness activities. The staircase connects four levels of space, with chairs and lush flower beds along the way. This towering atrium can be called the "living room" of the student center, encouraging people to relax, focus on learning, or gather together here. The ceiling, beams, and columns made of acoustic laminated wood (ADLT) are decorated with natural materials and warm tones, including a series of customized components made of limestone and white oak, to create a warm and pleasant atmosphere.

The approach we take in interior architectural design is to carefully plan a series of social and flexible spaces to reflect the daily rhythm of students' lives outside of the classroom, "said David Rockwell, founder and president of Rockwell Group." The heavy wooden structure and column grid layout of the building inspired us to create a vibrant interior space. Here, natural materials, warm toned decorations, and layered lighting design create a harmonious and unified atmosphere in many functionally diverse areas. The ultimate result is an environment that encourages collaboration, performance, and gatherings - a fully functional lifestyle hub
