From the architect. Heatherwick Studio has once again partnered with Paris fashion brand Longchamp to transform its flagship store in New York City, where design, storytelling, and heritage intersect. Initially, the store was conceived as Longxiang's 100th boutique, and "La Maison Unique" quickly became a landmark building in the city center, acclaimed for its sculptural steel staircase and immersive design that blurred the boundary between architecture and drama.

The core of this redesign is the iconic wavy staircase of Heswick Studio, which consists of 30 hot-rolled steel strips and is now covered with Longxiang's iconic green color. This functional sculpture creates a leisurely atmosphere, guiding visitors upwards through the store and setting the tone for the entire experience, making it feel more like being in a cozy apartment rather than a traditional retail space.

This 9000 square foot boutique is located in a 1936 industrial attic, preserving original elements such as exposed brick walls and maple flooring. The newly added elements include sculptural oak furniture designed by David Nash, curved furniture customized by Heswick Studio, and vintage croissant shaped sofas designed by Raphael. The green carpet poured down from the carpeted pillars, as if paint was flowing from the ceiling to the ground.

The interesting and ingenious details add texture and personality to the environment. These details include neon signs, Andr é's graffiti artwork, and the glowing Longxiang Knight emblem. The layout has been re planned to enhance natural lighting and provide a broad view of Spring Street, encouraging guests to stop, interact, explore and discover. The collaboration between Heswick Studio and Longxiang began in 2004, when they jointly created the iconic Zip bag. This collaboration led to the unique design of the SoHo store and continues to shape the evolving retail experience.

Jean Cassegrain, CEO of Longxiang, stated, "Through this renovation, Thomas Heatherwick has reimagined the core of our store, injecting new vitality into our retail philosophy. Nowadays, the retail industry is shifting from pure functionality to a more emotional and experiential direction. The vibrant green staircase inspires dynamism and vitality, while elements such as David Nash's oak sculptures bring a sense of calm and eternity. This dialogue between authenticity and vitality defines the new SoHo boutique. Every design detail adds warmth, surprise, and personality to the space

Neil Hubbard, Partner and Team Leader at Heswick Studio, said, "At Heswick Studio, every project starts with a question. For SoHo boutique, the question is simple: how do we encourage people to walk up from such a narrow entrance? The answer is a kind of architectural landscape, a staircase that makes people feel leisurely walking, and when you reach the top, a sculptural shelf will be presented as a reward in front of you. This concept originated from our work on the La Maison Unique project many years ago, and it is exciting to see how these ideas have evolved over time. The retail industry is developing rapidly, but construction should last forever. We hope to create a space that is both bold and joyful, warm and sustainable - a place that invites people to stay like an apartment. From the rotating green carpet under the green carpet column to the curved furniture that feels both customized and full of life, all designs aim to create a unified and humanized atmosphere. Even the red brick wall where rotating exhibitions will be held downstairs helps to root the space in SoHo's industrial roots and create space for surprises
