From the architect. OYO Architects is an architectural firm with offices in Ghent and Barcelona, led by Ferran Massip, Nigel Jooren, Eddy Soete, Veroniek Vanhaecke, and Lies Willaert. The firm has launched the Lyco House project. The project is located in the green rural area of Pepingen, Belgium, less than 30 kilometers from Brussels. It transforms an old barn into a modern and sustainable residence with an area of 312 square meters. The highlight of its design lies in the unique architectural intervention technique: cutting a triangle on the original building volume to form an inner courtyard, allowing natural light to fill the entire residence, while creating a smooth transition effect with the outdoor space.

The main challenge faced by this project is to renovate the internal space of the barn without changing the original exterior facade. By taking a strategic intervention measure - removing some of the building's volume, the architect re planned the spatial layout and created a central courtyard, transforming the originally dim and enclosed space into a peaceful residence filled with light. In addition, OYO Architects successfully maintained its harmonious integration with the rural landscape during the renovation of the house. In this way, the exterior on one side of the street still retains the traditional appearance of a barn, while the exterior on the other side shows a surprising transformation. As the architect explained, "We attempt to create a warm and safe atmosphere inside without compromising the excellent landscape views carefully introduced from the openings of new and old windows

The interior space of Lyco House is cleverly arranged through staggered, mezzanine, and elevated designs, connected by a geometric green steel staircase custom designed by Atelier Manus. This spatial solution connects the bedroom with the living area, kitchen with the garden, and living room with the elevated terrace, blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor. The living space is centered around the kitchen, where a large salmon pink island counter stands out prominently. The ceiling is made of light colored pine wood and polished gray cement, creating a sharp contrast with the dark wood used for custom-made furniture by carpenter Hout en Interieur. Ascending from the kitchen, one arrives at a slightly higher living area, marked by a distinctive wooden ceiling and large windows leading to an outdoor terrace. The furniture has been carefully selected, with neutral tones as the main color, supplemented by green and clay accents, creating a soft and natural atmosphere in a warm and balanced environment.

To ensure thermal comfort, sustainability, and energy efficiency, OYO Architects used eco-friendly and recyclable materials during the renovation process. The old asbestos roof has been completely renovated, and solar panels and other environmental protection technology equipment have been installed inside the house. The landscape design led by Denis Dujardin played a crucial role in shaping the surrounding environment, achieving a natural and harmonious integration with the surrounding rural landscape through the use of local vegetation. In addition, a clever and concealed scheme has been designed to handle the excess rainwater in the area, directing it into natural ponds for purification and gradually allowing it to seep back into the ground.
