From the architect. The Houtrak project, designed by Marcel Lok_Architect and Workshop Architect, is located at the end of the Oostenburger River on Oostenburg Island in Amsterdam. In recent years, this former industrial area, once known for its iconic Van Gendt Hallen and Initiat buildings, has transformed into a vibrant city block that combines residential, commercial, dining, entertainment, and hotel amenities. The Houtrak complex consists of two buildings: one is a 6-story building with an exterior made of recycled Azob é solid wood and equipped with a solid wood balcony facing the water surface; The other building is a 4-story structure with a single pitched roof and a black brown metal cladding on the exterior, facing Isaac Titsingkade Avenue and Rumphius Street.

The Houtrak project is entirely constructed using prefabricated components. Its structure utilizes the modular CD20 building system, with precast concrete floor slabs placed on sturdy wooden columns to form an open support structure, filled with lightweight partition walls. The separation of equipment pipelines and supporting structures provides flexibility for future renovations. The balconies of the wooden building are also made of solid Asobe wood, and the design inspiration for these platforms comes from the industrial characteristics of Ostenburg. The project has thus built a flexible structural system that achieves efficient construction while ensuring flexibility in current and future layout and use.

Within the Houtrak project, there are 36 apartments of different layouts, ranging in size from 38 square meters to 160 square meters of penthouses. The project aims to ensure that each apartment has spacious outdoor space. All balconies have a depth of two and a half meters and a width equivalent to that of a house. The roof is also designed as a rooftop terrace, with the rooftop terrace of 11G being privately owned and the rooftop terrace of 11H being a public terrace. In addition, the project also constructed a public bike shed with an independent entrance in the lower half underground of the building complex.

The Houtrak project has also made significant achievements in the field of sustainable development. Each apartment is equipped with an independent heat pump and source, with excellent insulation performance, and features three glass two cavity wood aluminum composite windows and wooden window frames, all of which are cleverly hidden behind the exterior facade. The wooden facade is made by sawing the side panels recovered from the canal retaining walls in the southern Netherlands. The metal clad plate is coated with a gray brown powder coating, while the Asobei wood presents a naturally weathered appearance and does not require maintenance.

Both buildings have entrances on Isaac Titsingkade Avenue and are connected by a compact skylight courtyard, with all residents' front doors leading to the courtyard. The ground floor is designed as a two-story staggered residential building with ultra-high living space. On the upper level, various types of apartments are distributed, ranging from compact rooms to spacious loft layouts. Wooden buildings have deep cantilevered balconies facing the water surface, while metal buildings are equipped with semi indoor balconies that serve as part of the exterior facade, ensuring privacy between neighbors. In addition, Flux landscape architects have designed a public rooftop garden on top of the wooden building.
