Skylab New Office/Skylab Architecture

Due to business development exceeding the capacity of the existing office space in downtown Portland, Oregon, Skylab Architecture has begun searching for a new location to meet the evolving needs of its interdisciplinary practice. Its vision is not only to gain more space, but also to create a vibrant park that integrates design, construction, community interaction, and experimentation. A triangular plot of land in the northwest industrial area of Portland provides an opportunity to realize this vision.

The headquarters built from this covers an area of 10752 square feet (approximately 1000 square meters) and consists of two prefabricated steel structure warehouse buildings. These industrial buildings with arched structures were originally built in the 1940s for use by Titan Metal Products Corp. Skylab strategically incorporates modernization while preserving the original industrial characteristics of the building. A large area of glass curtain wall is added to the north and south facades, and four 10x10 foot (about 3x3 meters) openable french window walls are set on the east side, significantly improving the lighting effect and spatial connectivity. A central skylight extends from the original 40 feet (about 12 meters) to 60 feet (about 18 meters), bringing natural light deep into the interior of the building on the east side.

Indoor spaces cater to the diverse needs of both focused work and collaborative activities. The facilities include a fully equipped kitchen and dining area, audio-visual lounge, 3D printing laboratory, and a combination of open and closed workspaces. Industrial materials such as exposed concrete floors, aluminum window frames, and polyester coated insulation create a balance with warm elements, such as conference rooms made of cross laminated wood (CLT), custom wooden cabinets, and indoor landscapes planted with 15 foot (approximately 4.5 meters) tall trees. The renovation and upgrading also includes the improvement of barrier free facilities and the updating of energy systems.

Adjacent to the main studio is SkylabSHOP, a construction workshop that will be completed in 2024 and covers an area of 1000 square feet (approximately 93 square meters). Its design aims to deeply integrate prototype production and physical construction into the core of the design process, supporting full-scale experiments on form, materials, and construction techniques. It enables teams to test ideas, optimize designs, and create unique customized components for project sites.

In addition to the building, the site has also planned 13148 square feet (approximately 1222 square meters) of composite outdoor space. Gardens, activity and relaxation areas, planting belts, outdoor kitchens, campfire pits, and flexible gathering places serve both daily use and carry out public activity projects. The on-site parking area adopts an elastic design, which can be easily converted into a space for dining car parking, art installation display, and performance activities.
