Sona Institute of Technology was founded in 1993 and its campus has developed into an educational excellence center in the "steel city" of Salem, Tamil Nadu. Against the backdrop of this industrial city, the institute creates a vibrant, growth promoting, and innovative learning environment for students. The college initially accommodated one thousand students, but as it rapidly developed, it needed to be continuously expanded, so the overall plan continued to be adjusted to accommodate the current scale of over eight thousand students. This growth reflects the desire of the people in Salem and surrounding areas for upward mobility and diverse educational opportunities. Since the beginning of the project, IMK has been involved, and the recent addition project to this continuously growing center is the administrative and library buildings of Sona Institute of Technology. These two buildings are jointly designed as modern landmarks, symbolizing the college's commitment to progress. As the 'ladder to the future', these two buildings are a model of innovative architecture in Salem. The unique appearance of the library building has become the new face of Sona Institute of Technology. It is envisioned as a symbol of progress, with a stepped exterior, unique design, eye-catching materials, and a clock tower that overlooks the panoramic view of the city.

The administrative building and library building are located near the main construction building (known as the heritage building due to being the first building built in 1993), with administrative offices, employment guidance departments, corporate floors, conference rooms, banquet halls, management dormitories, an auditorium that can accommodate one thousand people, and a state-of-the-art technology friendly library.
行政楼与图书馆楼位于主工程楼(因其是 1993 年建成的第一栋楼而广为人知,被称为遗产楼)附近,设有行政办公室、就业指导部门、企业楼层、会议室、宴会厅、管理层宿舍、一个可容纳一千人的礼堂以及一个最先进的科技友好型图书馆。

Entering the campus, visitors will first encounter the vast public space in front of the library building. This has become the latest gathering place and communication area for students, as the planning has indeed taken a step back to avoid obstructing the heritage building and its accessible view, which is a key link connecting all other buildings on campus. The rustic granite steps leading to the library connect the building to the rest of the campus and serve as an outdoor plaza. These steps take into account existing trees and develop around them. The trees have been preserved and highlighted as the entrance to the library.

After entering the library, visitors and students will see a well lit and well ventilated atrium with an indoor plaza, continuing the experience of a stepped public space. This indoor square creates a pleasant atmosphere for students, allowing them to communicate, interact, and read under natural light during the day. Due to the orientation of the building, the skylight in the atrium allows natural light to penetrate during the day, while louvers are installed to block heat. This helps improve indoor ventilation and air circulation, following the main design parameters of seamless integration of indoor experiences in each building on campus.

Although libraries have always been regarded as the primary source of knowledge in educational campuses, in today's rapidly developing world of technology, inviting students into physical libraries to interact with books may seem daunting. The college addresses this challenge by integrating multiple interactive spaces throughout the building, which facilitate seamless connections between formal and informal spaces, encouraging students to explore and easily access books and other resources. There is also a dedicated area for e-readers, e-books, and virtual interface methods to access available resources.

The design of Sona Library breaks the monotony of traditional libraries, goes beyond traditional learning environments, and encourages teamwork and innovation. Here, interaction and dialogue nurture new ideas and cultivate a strong sense of community among students. The Sona Library has created a nurturing environment, sowing the seeds of future breakthroughs through collective exploration and shared learning experiences.

The function of the library is not limited to reading space, but truly adopts a student-centered approach. A auditorium that can accommodate one thousand people is located below the entrance steps of the library. Although not initially planned in this way, this design was later added to meet the evolving needs of the college. In addition to the auditorium, there is also an open-air theater and a caf é for students to relax, unwind, and communicate.

These two buildings are defined by four prominent horizontal bands, each with different volumes and materials, creating the illusion of multiple buildings. The use of scale and materials creates a hierarchical structure, with each layer distinguished by different materials such as metal mesh, masonry boxes, double glass hollow sliding windows, and double glass hollow structural glass. This showcases the concept of a 'staircase to the future', emphasizing a forward thinking design philosophy that integrates different materials, symbolizing the progress and evolution of architectural principles.

The university center is essentially an administrative building connected to the library, with 6-7 conference rooms that can accommodate 8-40 people, a banquet hall that can accommodate 50 people, and two levels of management dormitories. It also has an employment guidance department office and a corporate floor and management room. This campus has an 8-story tower, with a board meeting room on the top floor that overlooks the panoramic view of the city. This tower is also the tallest landmark in Salem, standing out in the urban landscape and further enhancing the college's identity as a landmark.

The core design principles of all buildings on the Sona Institute of Technology campus are the same - driven by fundamental principles of functionality and sustainability, ensuring better lighting, ventilation, flow, and indoor outdoor connectivity. However, each building still has a unique identity and characteristics that evolve with the needs of the college. Although they all belong to the same whole, they remain faithful to the era in which they were built. The administrative and library buildings of Sona Institute of Technology complement the main administrative building (heritage building), integrating modern architectural elements and seamlessly blending with the campus. The campus and each building, including recent additions, have achieved a balance between aesthetic appeal and functional efficiency, reflecting the college's modern educational philosophy and community integration.
