This exterior wall is composed of 1444 square meters of vivid green and yellow toned panels, decorated with textured glass, integrating lively aesthetic design with advanced solar power generation technology. Regarding the project - the renovation of De Kierkel School was initiated by the Amsterdam City Government, and the school was initially designed by Lisbeth van der Pol from Dok Architecten. In the summer of 2024, the building underwent a thorough renovation. The outdated bright green casing has been replaced by custom designed colored solar panels from Solarix. The municipal government has invited Dok Architecten to participate in ensuring that the new exterior wall design (including solar panels) perfectly matches the renovated building. The final building features a striking and colorful exterior wall decorated with textured glass, composed of solar panels in different shades of green and yellow. This new appearance adds a lively and cheerful atmosphere to the building, perfectly matching the lively atmosphere of the two schools, daycare centers, and public health facilities here. At the same time, the design maximizes the power generation of solar energy. A total of 1444 square meters of exterior wall panels were installed, of which 160 square meters were simulated panels.

Innovation and Security - De Kekel's solar photovoltaic system utilizes advanced inverters and optimizers provided by Huawei. To ensure safety, the solar exterior wall incorporates fast shutdown technology, which can shut down the panel to zero volts in emergency situations. The system was developed in consultation with the Amsterdam Fire Brigade. Huawei's inverters comply with the new international IEC 63027:2023 arc fault detection standard, which is a key safety function to prevent arc faults from causing fires. The arc fault detection system combined with optimizer has undergone strict testing by TNO. This makes De Kikel not only a sustainable project, but also a safe model project, especially considering its involvement in primary schools. The design team installed 507 optimizers in the project to improve the performance of each Solarix panel. Kuijpers Installatietechniek is responsible for the entire installation process, including designing a series connection scheme that can accommodate 20 different panel types. In addition, the project also installed 8 6000W inverters. Although panels installed facing south on roofs typically generate more electricity, the exterior walls of De Kikel can generate over 170 kilowatt hours of energy on sunny days, enough to power approximately 22 households.

Staircase artwork - As part of the renovation project, local residents, students, and artist Robin de Cruyff collaborated to create a colorful artwork for the school's outdoor staircase.
