From the architect. Sai Kirupa Special School focuses on providing professional education and vocational training for children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other learning disabilities. The new campus located in Tirupur aims to create a center centered on the comprehensive development of students, helping them cultivate independence and self-care abilities. The campus design has been carefully considered, fully responding to the diverse needs of students and creating an environment that supports growth and development. Due to the fact that the school is operated by a charitable trust fund, the implementation of the project heavily relies on donated funds. Therefore, the design plan must have flexibility to gradually build in stages once funds are available.

The building adopts a two-story design, clearly dividing different functional areas, while supporting gradual construction and rapid deployment in each stage. The ground floor is a day school, which has been completed in three stages. Through the application of structural expansion joints, each part can be put into use after completion. This phased construction method also allows for design optimization based on actual usage feedback. The first floor is planned as dormitories and classrooms for students with low dependency, and is currently being promoted as the next phase of construction.

In response to climate conditions, the layout and orientation of the building maximizes the use of the north and south facades, and reduces direct solar heat gain through simple shading design. The concise rectangular plane further enhances the clear and easy to understand spatial design, making it convenient for users to navigate. The building is arranged around a central open space, divided into north and south wings. The central bridge not only connects the two wings, but also forms a small open-air theater in the front courtyard, which can be used as a stage and provide convenient access for visitors. The larger back courtyard provides students with outdoor play and healing spaces, creating a functional environment.

Similarly, the administrative office is located at the front of the building, near the entrance and providing direct access. The more private student areas - classrooms, treatment rooms, and caregiver spaces - are arranged deeper in the building to ensure privacy and the rationality of functional zoning.

In each level of design, the planning fully considers the sensory needs of students and cleverly incorporates practical transitional spaces. The arcade style corridor connects the open courtyard with the indoor space, and benches are set along the edges to facilitate students' indirect participation in courtyard activities. The long corridor forms a small groove area at the entrance of each classroom, serving as a stopping point and providing convenient storage space for backpacks, shoes, etc.

The north wing building consists of independent units each containing eight classrooms, which not only meet academic needs but also cater to students' personal care needs. Due to the fact that many students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) require toilet training, each classroom unit is equipped with dedicated restrooms and adjacent changing and cleaning spaces. These areas are designed with hollowed out walls, ensuring sufficient lighting and ventilation while providing privacy protection for children. The south wing building is equipped with larger treatment rooms and restaurants to support the comprehensive development needs of students.

The streamlined design of the entire building incorporates experiential elements, such as colored tiles embedded in the floor as visual cues, encouraging students to move and develop their motor skills. These ceramic tile inserts are set along the corridor to stimulate students' jumping and climbing, thereby promoting their dual growth in physical and cognitive abilities. At the entrance of each classroom, bright tangram patterns are combined with arched chairs decorated with ceramic tiles to create eye-catching stopping points. These unique colors and shapes not only enhance recognition, but also provide clear visual cues for students' navigation.

In the hot climate of Tirupur, both courtyards are covered with stretch film sunshades, providing comfortable open spaces for games and gatherings. The design of the backyard aims to promote organized and unstructured play, stimulating students' senses in a peaceful manner through sensory pathways and landscape elements. A bridge spanning a small pond cultivates students' balance ability through games, while areas for group and individual activities encourage flexible interactive methods. Traditional amusement equipment, such as swings and slides, complement these sensory functions to create a rich gaming experience.

The selection of materials and structural details fully considers the local soil conditions and seismic requirements. The stones and pebbles found on site were used for foundation construction, while the gravelly soil was used for handmade adobe bricks. The exposed masonry of these bricks presents a soft natural tone, creating a peaceful visual experience. The combination of rough wall textures and undulating arched ceilings effectively reduces environmental noise, providing students with a quiet and sensory friendly learning environment.
