Studio Gang's new work: California Institute of the Arts San Francisco campus expansion
Studio Gang

From the architect. Studio Gang has completed the latest expansion project for the California Institute of the Arts (CCA) campus in San Francisco. This newly constructed hybrid laminated timber structure not only supports art and design education, but also sets a new benchmark in sustainable architecture. By connecting with the existing main teaching building of the college, the new building creates a space for internal and external integration, stimulating collaboration and communication among students, teachers, and various creative disciplines.

The 82305 square foot expansion project designed by Studio Gang for the California Institute of the Arts (CCA) is based on a sturdy concrete foundation. The design team optimized the underlying space to meet the needs of creative practice, featuring a large flexible workspace suitable for workshops and manufacturing spaces, and opened up two spacious creative courtyards in concrete pedestals, providing ample sunlight and ventilation, creating an ideal environment for artists and designers to collaborate.

On top of the concrete pedestal, two glued laminated timber structure pavilions provide space for classrooms and studios, and offer a new venue for CCA Wattis Contemporary Art Institute. These pavilions lead to a lush terraced landscape, connecting the upper and lower levels of the building and encouraging students to engage in informal gatherings and group activities outdoors. Each pavilion's spacious balcony serves as both a sunshade walkway and an open learning area, allowing students to study and communicate in the mild San Francisco climate year-round. This laminated wood structure is the first of its kind in California, featuring a unique eccentric support frame system that highlights the natural beauty and structural functionality of the wood.

The design is centered around sustainability, and Studio Gang's strategy is not only beneficial to the environment, but also provides more convenience for teachers and students at the California Institute of the Arts. The building adopts a mixed laminated wood structure, which reduces the carbon footprint by nearly half compared to traditional structures. Important heavy equipment and physically intensive activity spaces are strategically concentrated on the ground level to optimize structural load distribution and improve future adaptability. In addition, passive climate control measures such as self shading facades and nighttime ventilation systems effectively reduce the building's reliance on mechanical cooling. Meanwhile, the system has been pre-set to support a closed-loop, net zero energy consumption building mode in the future.
