The new building in the expansion project forms an interesting dialogue with the original design completed in 1973. Organic characteristic elements such as curved shapes, natural materials, and porous spaces complement the original architecture. The expansion project also strengthens the founding theme of the college's "participatory democracy" by creating open spaces of different scales, which can be used for both individual and collective activities, ranging from personal contemplation and relaxation to social gatherings and community events. Jeanne Gang, founder and partner of Studio Gang, said, "Our goal is to add new characteristics to the original building, rather than replicating its architectural style." "We hope that the expanded college will retain the unique surprise and free spirited temperament of Kresge College, while also being open to students of all ability levels, integrating into the unique natural ecology of the college's location, and connecting with the university community

The academic center of Kresge College, covering an area of 37000 square feet, features new classrooms, academic offices, faculty meeting rooms, and conference rooms. There is also a lecture hall here that can accommodate 600 people, making it the largest facility of its kind on the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) campus. The building is located on a ridge between two canyons, drawing inspiration from the common growth pattern of porous fungi - descending along the slope while extending outward, cleverly adapting to steep terrain. By adopting this strategy, this relatively large building is able to coordinate its proportion with surrounding buildings at the upper street level, while also introducing natural light and fresh air to the lower levels. At the same time, three newly constructed dormitory buildings have met the urgent demand for student housing in Santa Cruz by adding over 400 beds for students. The ground floor of each building is designed around shared facilities, including a lounge and a new caf é, which extend the social space of the adjacent pedestrian street, allowing students to gather and communicate in a spacious and friendly environment. As one of the first buildings in California to be constructed using cross laminated timber, these new buildings blend seamlessly with the natural features of the site, reducing the carbon footprint. The building follows the layout of important trees on the site, conforms to the existing terrain, minimizes the logging of redwood trees, and fully utilizes the shade formed by the tree canopy to reduce cooling load. In addition, these buildings also use bird proof glass to protect the rich biodiversity in the forest; Studio Gang designed customized glass etching patterns that showcase 12 different animal species discovered at the site, including the mascot of the University of California, Santa Cruz - the banana slug.

In addition, the design also restored and expanded the historic canal system of Kresge College, allowing the passage path to adapt to the terrain and ecology of the site, guiding, collecting, and filtering rainwater to achieve rainwater reuse. The expansion project of Studio Gang also repaired and built new pedestrian walkways, fully meeting today's accessibility standards and achieving barrier free access for wheelchair users for the first time. The restoration of existing canyon bridges has further improved accessibility and provided a more friendly connection to other areas of the University of California, Santa Cruz, while preserving the landscape view of the surrounding redwood forests. To demonstrate the principle of "participatory democracy" at Kresge College, Studio Gang extensively solicited opinions from students, faculty, alumni, and residents of Santa Cruz during the 18 month expansion planning phase and subsequent design phase. This process includes holding regular town hall meetings, committee meetings, and other informal communication activities, where the design team seeks feedback from all parties on the progress of the design.
