Printing House Square is the first square built within Trinity College Dublin in two centuries. McCullough Mulvin Architects was appointed to lead the project after winning a limited competition. This design creates a new gateway between the college and the city, opening up this historic campus along a previously opaque stretch of Pearse Street. The courtyard style design provides student dormitories, health and disability service facilities, and a sports center - with its stone roof extending downwards, creating a cozy surrounding space for the 18th century printing factory building.

The building is shaped like a granite boulder, with a unique wavy stone roof that not only reflects the contours of distant mountains, but also echoes the rows of ordinary Georgian style roofs in the city nearby. The choice of building materials complements its form and location - the bottom is a concrete base with a wood grain texture, supporting the "world" covered with granite on top. Through the landscaped opening in the courtyard, one can vaguely glimpse the facilities in the lower levels. The building establishes a close relationship between contemporary architecture and historical texture in terms of form and material: solid stone gables surround the classical temple style architecture of the printing factory, creating a rocky landscape environment that still dominates the view in the direction of New Square and Berkeley Library.

The project provides a total of 250 beds and offers a shared kitchen/living/dining space for every 6 to 8 students. These spaces are suspended above health centers and disability service facilities; All these areas use natural lighting. The services provided by the sports center include squash, handball, and triathlon training, with the squash courts designed as flexible spaces equipped with movable partitions for future use adjustments based on demand. Trinity College Dublin adheres to an inclusive policy and is committed to creating the best living, working, and learning environment for students and faculty. This building perfectly embodies these concepts and achieves all-round barrier free access. The diverse environmental design inside the building provides suitable places for people with different abilities and needs - from the vibrant shared living space on the ground floor (where young students meet, live, and play) to the quiet and monastery like floors on the top floor, it cleverly integrates peaceful standing rooms into the roof space, like a Parisian attic, allowing people to enjoy the open scenery and feel refreshed through the narrow granite courtyard.

The printing factory square project fully taps into the development potential of this precious plot in the city center. By utilizing the land intensively, the project has planned a deep basement to accommodate indoor sports facilities, while reducing some of the building structure and introducing natural light into the depths of the health center and disability service area, resulting in an iceberg like shape of the building profile. In terms of structure, the entire building is made of Ecocem low-carbon concrete. All building components have excellent insulation and airtightness performance, achieving excellent heat transfer coefficient (U value). All types of facilities follow sustainable design concepts, including basement cogeneration systems, rooftop air source heat pumps, press type faucets that reduce water waste, and lighting systems controlled by motion sensors. The screens set up at the entrance of each household display real-time energy consumption data, encouraging residents to reduce energy consumption. Rainwater collection system is used for landscape irrigation. The material selection also focuses on sustainability: natural stone exterior walls, linen oil carpet flooring, exposed concrete, and wood from sustainable certified sources. The wayfinding system is implemented through color design, where each household is assigned different tones from a specific color scheme, and this color identification is continued in the stairwell to create a unique sense of belonging for each resident. This project has been awarded the BREEAM Outstanding Certification by the British Institute of Building Research for Environmental Assessment Methods.
