The project site is located in Miyamae Garden City, Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture. Here, the existing traditional residential houses and agricultural warehouses are adjacent to vegetable gardens and farmland, preserving a rare and untouched post-war style in the constantly developing urban structure of the Tokyo metropolitan area. This nostalgic atmosphere and feeling are both the starting point and underlying philosophy of the project.

The project aims to renovate the existing agricultural warehouse, transform it into a restaurant, and build a new warehouse for storing and converting locally produced vegetables and fruits. In order to understand and showcase this strong background, the design team found old photos and planning maps of the plot, and decided to use them as a reference: trees were transplanted back to their original positions, old bridge stones were reused, forming paths and steps.

This agricultural warehouse has maintained its original appearance since the late Edo period. In order to respect this important historical background, the design team has decided to carefully restore the facade and the original door using the same traditional materials. In order to accommodate the restaurant, we removed the floor of the second floor and created a skylight, enhancing the space and lighting sense while showcasing the beautiful wooden skeleton structure. The dismantled wooden floor was later renovated and used as a cladding material for the surrounding walls inside. The wall facing the counter is covered with locally grown cedars. The overall feeling is like standing on a very ancient tree trunk, giving people a warm and safe feeling.

In order to maintain continuity between the old and new, the new building is located adjacent to the original warehouse, with a consistent height and overall profile. We used hammered copper sheets on the roof to reflect the trees and plants in the garden, bringing light and reflection. These copper sheets were designed in close collaboration with the client and hammered into shape during a workshop that gathered everyone from the local community on a hot summer day. The design team believes that the copper roof and exterior facade design have formed a dialogue with the overall environment. Overall, although this building is newly constructed, it does not appear abrupt, but rather blends seamlessly with its environment.
