This building, formerly known as a garage, was built in 1957 and designed by the first Rome Prize winner and architect Claude B é raud. It is located at 58-60 Rue Palmont in the 11th arrondissement of Paris. This project involves a large-scale renovation and structural reorganization of the building, as well as the addition of a three story expansion section. The structure adopts a wood metal hybrid structure, equipped with a frame style facade and wooden cladding. The original building volume has been preserved and elevated, while interspersed with courtyards and gardens, allowing for the development of 63 residential units and a commercial space. Therefore, the project has almost completely preserved the structure of the original garage.

To create a landscape view within the massive garage building occupying the entire plot, the project team removed the ramps connecting the multi-level platforms. The demolition work spanned the entire building height, creating a courtyard space at the core of the block. In addition, by partially demolishing the existing floors, two courtyards were opened inside the initial building volume. The retention of the beam mesh structure is mainly to maintain the stability of the peripheral walls. To avoid burdening the existing garage foundation, the load of the expansion section is jointly borne by its independent foundation system and a new structure integrated with the existing structure, which runs through the existing building and does not transmit additional stress.

The building system of the expansion section is based on metal column beam structure, and the walls and guardrails adopt wooden frame structure. The floor is composed of cross laminated wooden panels, covered with insulation layers, and a concrete leveling layer is poured to accommodate the underfloor heating system. The exterior of this three story expansion building is covered with vertical wooden strips, forming a sharp contrast with the smooth and uniform concrete texture of the original preserved facade. The original facade was composed of raised concrete strips, which have now been repaired and new single-layer glass sliding windows have been installed. Added a second floor facade on lower floors; The wooden panels give the facade a furniture like appearance and reversible characteristics, which not only protect the apartment from environmental noise and winter cold, but also facilitate flexible adjustments. The sliding folding door allows the entire apartment to open up to the winter garden created in the mezzanine. Thus, the facade preserved in this former garage resembles a totem, carrying the memory of the site and witnessing the existence of cars in Paris' history and the evolution of urban policies.

The project plans to create 63 residential units, distributed across three floors, covering various layouts from one bedroom to five bedroom, including two two bedroom duplex apartments. All residential units have specific connections to outdoor spaces, including winter gardens, loggia, and spacious rear terraces. Most apartments are designed with dual orientations, and the newly opened courtyard provides the possibility for creating a garden. The preservation of the original structural beams in the renovated residential units enhances the historical heritage value of the building. This project allows the building to reintegrate into the surrounding neighborhood, transforming an abandoned garage and originally enclosed, inward facing building into a residential building with an entrance porch leading to a garden, a courtyard surrounded by greenery, and a spacious terrace at the back of the plot. Therefore, the renovated garage, with its architectural style and volume design, seamlessly integrates with the surrounding community, creating a warm and pleasant atmosphere for residents.
