In the Buikslotterham district of Amsterdam, the Cityplot area is gradually revitalizing. Earlier, Studioninedots collaborated with DELVA to develop a city concept plan for this area. The plan is to transform this abandoned industrial zone into a vibrant and sustainable urban area, with collective consciousness, local values, diversity, and resilience at its core. For this purpose, architecture, public spaces, and landscapes will work together as a comprehensive system.

Standing on the banks of the Tolhuiskanaal Canal, C14 has become an abstract artwork with its mysterious and inscrutable appearance, and is also the latest building in Cityplot Buikslotterham. One iconic feature of this project is its steel facade, which meets multiple functions simultaneously. The arrangement of serrated balconies not only creates a protected outdoor space for new residents at once, but also maximizes the introduction of natural light through large windows and showcases the original style of the building.

The design team envisioned C14 as a warehouse, but it was positioned sideways and redesigned with modern techniques. In this way, the design team not only paid tribute to the industrial history of the site, but also utilized the functionality of the warehouse sloping roof. On the one hand, its sharp and angular structure enhances natural lighting on one side; On the other hand, it also creates a shading effect on the other side, avoiding excessive heating in summer and ensuring that the entire facade is in a protective microclimate.

This design concept enabled the design team to place all outdoor spaces of C14 in a south facing and water facing location. The large glass walls seamlessly connect the balcony with the house, allowing natural light and beautiful scenery to flood into the interior.

By relocating the bicycle parking out of the building, the design team provided space on the first floor for creative enterprises facing the water and residential buildings behind glass curtain walls on the street, which activated the surrounding public spaces around the clock. Behind this unified exterior wall, there are various types of residences, ranging from the ground floor houses along the street to the spacious top floor apartments at the top of the building.

C14 is one of the larger buildings on plot C, with a total of seven buildings constructed on the plot. The C plot, also known as Tolhuiskade, was planned according to the "Cityplot" concept, which aims to transform former industrial and factory land into a new urban area with an ideal plot area of 100x100 meters.

In the "Cityplot" planning, different functions that are usually scattered throughout the city are integrated into a compact urban community. Each building is designed with its unique visual language, ensuring the diversity of the architecture and the distinct characteristics of the area.

Therefore, on the inside of Tolhuiskade, C14 becomes the abstract background for smaller, more expressive buildings such as the black C19. This building, consisting of two stacked residential buildings, is the first of its kind. From now on, other small buildings will also be gradually added to the plot.

The outer skin of C14 is made of shiny Magnelis steel, a metal that is galvanized in the welding pool. This endows the building with dual characteristics, as it can blend into the sky and attract your attention by reflecting sunlight. At the same time, this type of steel is reminiscent of Buikslotterham's industrial history and can be reused in the future.

On one side of the field, the design team added a small wooden pavilion for storing bicycles and storing water. The rainwater collected here can be reused by residents. The design team found that the warm atmosphere of the wooden pavilion contrasts sharply with the sturdy steel exterior of C14, and will soon also contrast with other upcoming buildings on Tolhuiskade. At night, the louvered facade of the wooden pavilion lights up like a lantern, becoming a friendly lighthouse in this emerging community.
