Dog Villa on Awaji Island: 'What has changed, what remains unchanged' - This project is located in the northern part of Awaji Island and is a rental villa facing the sea, designed specifically for dog owners. In recent years, the northern part of Awaji Island has experienced rapid urbanization, with many new caf é and theme park developments along the coast, resulting in significant changes to the landscape. Faced with this uncertain and ever-changing background, architects hope to respond to these rapid changes through ambiguity and contradiction, rather than unilaterally rejecting or unconditionally accepting them.

This site reflects the unique topographical features of the northern part of Awaji Island, where mountains and seas are connected. Due to limited flat land, dense housing, and close proximity to roads and residential areas, the road environment has a direct impact on the site. Therefore, the architect chose to design a courtyard style building as a protective buffer zone against the noisy road ahead and the surrounding residential areas. On the other hand, a large opening has been created on the street facing side to capture this constantly changing environment and the view towards the sea. These openings not only quietly introduce external reality into the interior, but also play a role in the internal space, visually connecting all internal spaces and creating interesting perspectives along the boundaries.

In the courtyard, the height difference is solved by jumping steps, and the building as a whole crawls on a gentle hill, forming a circular flow line between the indoor and outdoor areas, and connecting the two terraces. The terrace on the north side provides a bright and peaceful view, overlooking the courtyard and distant scenery from the shade of trees; The terrace on the south side allows people to enjoy the starry sky after dinner or bathing. Due to the difference in building height, these positions block the surrounding visual line, but introduce wind and light, forming a 'ma awai' space (referring to the shallow space formed between surrounding buildings).

The overall layout is like a necklace, with internal flow lines connecting small houses of different scales. Indoors, the ground level gradually increases, and the living room is set higher than the level where cars are driving on the street to avoid barking threats from dogs to passing vehicles. The gradually changing height difference between the levels divides the space, creating an environment where humans and dogs can coexist naturally without any wall partitions. In addition, there is a small takeaway restaurant located under the living room floor, creating a public space that connects the local community with the building and activates the parking lot ahead.

The exterior of the building adopts a uniform reddish brown color scheme, which echoes the surrounding environmental elements such as glazed tile roofs, painted cedar wood panels, warehouse steel facades, and bicycle parking lots. Through this project, the architect has created a space that allows people to relax in the present while resonating with subtle changes in time and environment.
