Two Generations of Same House Residences in Tennoji District by Fujiwara Muro Architects
FujiwaraMuro Architects

The venue is located in a residential area of Osaka city. The surrounding area of the site is densely populated with buildings, and the plot behind is located on a high retaining wall. The client requests the construction of a two generation family residence, ensuring internal privacy and planting greenery to connect it with the city. We hope to design a spacious space that allows light to enter while blocking the surrounding area, while considering the possibility of future reconstruction around the site.

Our goal is to create slits and other openings by using gaps while maintaining isolation between the building and its surrounding environment, creating a visual sense of expansion and depth that makes the space appear as if it transcends the field of view. Through these openings, light reflects off glass, concrete, and sprayed finishes, highlighting their different textures and colors, making people feel their material differences.

The building is divided into different volumes, each made of different materials such as wood, concrete, and gypsum. These volumes are staggered and arranged to allow sunlight and breeze to pass through the gaps between them. After passing through the tree lined entrance, people will arrive at the atrium that extends from the first floor to the third floor, and continue up the stairs suspended from the reinforced concrete walls.

The younger generation's families occupy the first and second floors, with one bedroom and guest room on the first floor, and an LDK (living room/dining room/kitchen) and bathroom/toilet on the second floor. The older generation of families live on the third floor, with a private room, LDK, and bathroom/toilet.

The staircase in the courtyard looks like an external staircase extending from the kitchen and dining room, giving a sense of liberation and openness. The plan has an open-air atrium extending to the third floor, where tall trees along the way can be seen from LDK. During the day, natural light is reflected into buildings. At night, the lights inside the building reflect various materials and seep out, allowing passersby to imagine the depth of the building.
