154 Amicus Residential Building/Giovanni Vaccarini Architetti
Giovanni Vaccarini Architetti

The new building located at 154 Via de Amici in the center of Pescara was designed by Giovanni Vacarini Architects, reinterpreting the concept of residential architecture by combining traditional typology with a more direct connection to the urban environment. This new building is envisioned as a series of overlapping residences, open to the city through a wide open platform extending around the central core. The ground floor of the building recedes towards the forefront of the street, occupying only the smallest part of the plot, creating conditions for continuity with surrounding public spaces.
The center of Pescara is built on a modern urban structure, with the Adriatic Sea coast and its linear development being a key reference. Giovanni Vacarini's studio has been located in Pescara for many years, and he repeatedly explores his architectural concepts in this context and the culture it shapes. Vacarini is an influential figure in the Italian architecture industry, who has developed numerous works and projects that study the interaction between private and public spaces, covering different types and scales of buildings: residential, school, sports stadium, energy production facilities, and hospitals. For Vacarini, Pescara is an experimental site where he can transform established typology. Palazizina, a multi family residential building, is one of his research focuses and a representative of this typology.

The new building located at 154 Via de Amici is close to 107 Riviera, which was built on the coast of Pescara two years ago. Giovanni Vacarini has already begun exploring his reinterpretation of multi family residential buildings in the context of the Adriatic Sea. That early project attracted the attention of the media and critics due to its original and exquisite composition choices, as well as the method of combining residential buildings with public spaces in the surrounding urban environment. Similar to the new building on Via de Amici è s, Riviera 107 is not limited to private boundaries, nor does it highlight itself along the street front. On the contrary, it has found a hybrid, intermediate solution that redefines the role of architecture in the city. This method enables buildings to interact with their background, challenging the traditional separation of private and public spaces.

Giovanni Vacarini's new work is located in a corner of a city block near the coast, just a step away from the central Saloto Square. Surrounded by tree lined avenues and several buildings of architectural significance, the multi family residential buildings on Via de Amici embody a contemporary vision and strongly emphasize their connection to the surrounding urban structure and public spaces. The building presents a series of stacked planes with lush terraces, completely surrounding the apartment and extending in multiple directions towards the city. The living space seems to expand eccentrically around the central core of the building, which occupies a small area on the ground floor, creating a dynamic interaction of expansion and contraction. This configuration utilizes line of sight and establishes visual and spatial connections with the surrounding environment, creating a captivating and outward relationship with the environment.
From the street level floor plan, the building presents a compact central core, occupying only a portion of the available land for construction. This central area is mainly used as an entrance to the upper floors and features a pathway that continues the pedestrian walkway, inviting visitors to pass through the building from one side to the other. On the upper level, this concept is reversed, with each level expanding to varying degrees, creating an open and dynamic architectural outline. Wakarini's approach to this project aims to reinterpret the architectural types of the neighborhood, incorporating a unique distribution concept shaped by unexpected sea views and urban backgrounds. Therefore, multi family residential buildings present a series of eye-catching stacked villa appearances. Observation and imitation of plant morphology are often present in the works of Wakarini. For example, the Via de Amici architecture in Pescara can be seen as a life form driven by the need to seek light, vision, and connection opportunities. Its six above ground floors can be flexibly extended, extending outward where the urban environment allows, seeking a glimpse of the landscape between mountains and seas. On the northwest side, the protruding part is most prominent, with a series of slender steel columns (three single columns and three pairs of columns) standing irregularly. These columns emphasize the perception of verticality and also contribute to the structural integrity of the building.

The exploration of contemporary urban space is also reflected in the decision to highlight buildings with multiple subtle rays of light radiating from the central core. These lights are mainly placed below prominent floors, usually extending along vertical walls, emphasizing the theme of extending the living experience into the city. This not only enhances the visual relationship between the building and the surrounding space, but also gives it a sense of identity and participation in the public domain. This decision also reflects the exploration of contemporary urban space.
