Ruen was invited to design a concept restaurant for the Bao Family located in the iconic old port of Marseille, France. The restaurant is located in a stone building that blends into the urban fabric of the Cambiyer district, combining aesthetics and historical significance. Gros Bao, a small Chinese restaurant, occupies the first three floors of the building, located between Cours Saint Louis and Rue des R é colettes. St. Louis Square is a symbolic public square of the Old Port, while Rue de la Cort é is a quiet street that runs perpendicular to Canebiere and leads to the revitalized Rue d'Aubagne.

In the early stages of the project, Ruen was drawn to the stark contrast between the openness of St. Louis Square and the quiet atmosphere of Recolete Street. To this end, the design involves creating a new vertical passage in the building that runs through three levels of space, dividing the building into two parts and forming a brand new 'artery'. This design not only reorganizes the spatial flow inside the restaurant, but also symbolically connects these two distinct urban atmospheres - the bustle of public squares and the tranquility of inner streets - organically.

Gros Bao belongs to Bao Family, a catering brand that interprets classic Chinese cuisine from a modern perspective, dedicated to leading diners on a taste journey full of nostalgia. Ruen drew inspiration from the similar spatial features of the site and the alleys in Shanghai, China, and incorporated the concept of alleys with urban texture into the design.

The interior details also use modern techniques to interpret the traditional style of Shanghai alleys, blurring the boundaries between public and private, cooking and dining, while capturing the unique lifestyle and street vitality of traditional alleys. These alleys not only carry the essence of local culture, but also create an immersive narrative journey for diners, allowing both locals and tourists to feel emotional resonance.

The selection of materials also echoes the simplicity and authenticity of Gros Bao's cuisine, from natural steel, white square bricks, galvanized steel plates, red walls to the original stone walls of the building, all presenting a sense of authenticity without deliberate carving. The exterior of the restaurant incorporates galvanized steel plates and metal frames on the basis of classic stone, creating a distinct modern contrast. The design inspiration for indoor customized furniture comes from Shanghai street food stalls, using simple metal frames combined with melamine board tables and chairs to further enhance the urban street atmosphere of the space.
