材料的在地性与工艺的数字化结合:设计深度挖掘了土耳其悠久的工艺传统,选用当地硬石和爱琴海岸的沙等在地材料,确保了游乐景观在视觉和触感上能和谐融入周边环境。更具创新性的是,在实现复杂的双曲面石质雕塑时,项目成功地将尖端的3D数字技术与当地匠人的精湛手工艺相结合。这种“高科技+传统工艺”的衔接策略,不仅解决了复杂几何形态的建造难题,更在实践中提升了工艺的边界,确保了最终形态的精准度和材料的在地性,是当代设计与在地制造的典范合作。
非限定性体验的公共空间哲学:项目摒弃了传统游乐场“指向性活动与限制性互动”的窠臼,创造了一个开放、多功能的雕塑式互动装置。其核心理念是将游乐场视为一个“公共空间优先”的场所,而非被隔离的儿童区域。它没有围栏,鼓励所有年龄段和背景的人群参与进来,通过滑、踏、攀、爬等模糊界限的活动,激发非预设的游戏和互动。这种模糊功能的设计哲学,极大提升了场地的包容性和活力,真正使游乐设施成为了促进社区交流体验的城市客厅。
At Tophane Park, Carve was invited to design a playground within the historic Tophane Park in 2020. This environment, which features a unique mix of ancient and contemporary architecture—including Ottoman Baroque buildings, the Ottoman-style Sultan Mahmut Fountain, and modern museums and shopping centers—immediately captured our attention, challenging us to create a playful and distinctive design. Our goal was to pay homage to the serene atmosphere of the park while harmoniously connecting with both the historic and new buildings within.

Understanding Turkey's long and rich craft tradition, Carve chose to incorporate traditional stone carving into the design. By utilizing local materials such as hard stone and wood, along with sand from the Aegean coastline, a harmonious material palette was achieved that blends perfectly with the surrounding architecture.
领会土耳其悠长而丰富的工艺传统后,Carve 选择将传统石雕融入设计。通过采用当地材料,如硬石和木,以及来自爱琴海岸线的沙,最终形成了和谐的材料搭配,与周围的建筑完美地融合在一起。
Inspired by the square shapes of the nearby Tophane Fountain, we shaped a vibrant and attractive play area that pays tribute to the fountain and its patron's nickname: Mahmut I, "The Hunchback." During the design process, the shapes were stretched and distorted to adapt to the environment, with one of the original four corners removed. The resulting configuration looks as if it has just escaped from the nearby Istanbul Modern Museum. It is conceived as a sculptural interactive landscape that promotes interaction between form, color, material, and the body.

The playground is composed of three zones that cater to different age groups. Within each zone, there is an area of sand with additional adventurous play elements set within it. This large sculptural object for play offers multiple functions (sliding, stepping, climbing, lying, crawling, performing, balancing), but these are not immediately discernible at first glance.
游乐场由三个区域组成,可以满足不同年龄群体的需求。每个分区内部都有一块沙地,设置了附加的探险游乐元素。这个用于游戏的大型雕塑物提供了多种功能(滑、踏、攀、躺、爬、表演、平衡),但第一眼都非清晰可辨。
When designing this project, we broke away from the conventional playground concept, which relies on prescriptive activities and restricted interactions; instead, we created multi-functional elements that inspire play. Our unconventional solution ultimately presents itself as a fluid sculpture that is fun and interesting for everyone, whether child or adult.

To simplify the construction process and ensure consistency in the final build, we chose to collaborate with a local manufacturer to realize the vision. We faced several challenges together during the design and engineering phases. For example, how to construct a large stone sculpture with many hyperboloid surfaces? As a solution, we combined some of the latest 3D digital technologies with high-level local craftsmanship.

At Carve, we view play as an important component of public space. We create environments for people of all ages, groups, and backgrounds. We find that what is most appealing is a public space that encourages multiple activities, fosters interaction among user groups, and is experiential.

The most special aspect of the Tophane Park Playground is that it maintains the continuity of the surrounding public space. It is not an area fenced off where parents can only watch from a distance; it is open to everyone, as long as you are not afraid to participate!
