exploring notions of the picturesque and the potential of architectural decay, chaikiyatsui, bernardodias and zhongqiuying have designed ‘timescape’ as part of their final thesis for the bartlett school M.arch program. immersed in nature, a series of autonomous structures stand along the river bank in coimbra, portugal. attempting to connect the urban fabric with the local national park, the contingency of the architecture is exposed – as the sculptures embrace their imperfections. the contrasting site conditions, the sharp edges of the built environment and the morphogenesis of nature – work to define an interface, shaped by this transitory momentum. the virtual side of the project explores the geometry of interlocking bricks, generated in 3D the pieces were cast using local materials; earth, cork, sand and cement, which when mixed in different ratios can be decomposed through high pressures of water. their morphological shape means that some parts are concrete based and structural, while others are more fragile, porous and textural. this process enables the architecture to be sacrificed to the wider landscape, creating a series of informal spaces that are both intriguing and uncertain.
