The master plan for Aalborg Waterfront links the city's medieval centre with the adjacent strait, which was previously difficult for citizens to access due to the industrial harbor and the associated heavy traffic. The qualities of the approximately one-kilometer stretch of quayside have been emphasized with a boulevard to accommodate cyclists and pedestrians.

At the same time, the city gets a promenade with steps and recessed terraces, allowing people to get close to the water. Various kinds of urban gardens facilitate activities such as markets, ball games and sunbathing. The medieval Aalborg Castle is once again the centerpiece of the port through the establishment of an extensive green area to frame the historic ramparts. The materials chosen are corresponding to the roughness of the strait itself, including asphalt, steel, concrete and wood, while at the same time containing subtle references to the sea through wavy pavement patterns, etc.
