What would happen if public spaces could become self-sufficient in terms of energy consumption? What if a public space functioned as an urban laboratory for the citizen management of energy? That’s the challenge posed by this urban experiment placed at the heart of Malasaña neighborhood in Madrid.

Three small urban devices that constitute three new urban fittings for Jardines del Arquitecto Ribera public square: an open classroom, an open stage and an info-point able to store energy and to endow the whole assembly with a maximum of 2KW/h for daily consumption to be used by people using the place. Likewise, the three devices deal with the interconnection of the physical space of this public square with a Twitter Machine @plaza_tribunal that controls certain interactions such as the possibility to switch the color of the artificial lighting at the square, the possibility to make selfies using a webcam or to leave messages to be displayed on a LED screen。

The main idea of the project is to experiment around how this energy self-sufficiency becomes a trigger for activation, promotion and co-management (liberalization) of citizen activities in public spaces. The solar energy accumulated in the storage systems (solar) of the devices are not only designed for individual use of mobile phone or computer load but rather to exploit new collective uses such as the screening of summer cinema or a small concert associated to the stage device or as an energetic support for a storyteller in the bleachers of the open classroom. Energy self-sufficiency thus enables a conquest of public space by citizen initiatives hitherto excluded from a free use of energy in the area of the street and the square.

A second important issue regarding energy and public space has to do with the need for an urban pedagogy that brings us closer to a responsible and shared consumption that should be justified from the finite character derived from the accumulative batteries of solar energy.

The third alternative of the future gravitates around the possibility of generating a calendar of possible activities that may include the needs of events of formal and informal neighborhood associations and unorganized citizenship. In this case, the “eventual” can become “habitual” and not in a state of exception or in a way of appropriating the public space always linked to the institution. Access to energy can be a first step in the process of appropriation of public space by a large number of citizen initiatives, experimenting towards a hybrid model of management between the City Council and the neighborhood, with new modes of co-management and use of space public.
