Design Description

1381-1 Yuyuan Road does not face the street; Retreat 30 meters from the bustling main street and make way for a small open space in front of the door. As the site of Element, a clothing buying store that has received much attention in recent years, this inconspicuous three story single family building is surrounded by a row of houses around it, retreating deep and only revealing a visible building facade. Appearing quiet and introverted in the bustling neighborhood, but also easily overlooked. Based on observations of the urban interface and detailed examination and information extraction of the building itself, Tao+C Xitao Design Studio has carried out a comprehensive renovation and design of the Element Yuyuan Road store.

Extraction of architectural elements

The small building is square and simple, with a low floor height, just like many houses from the 1980s and 1990s that people are accustomed to.. In the not optimistic economic situation, we do not want to make drastic changes to the building structure. We hope to enable Element to achieve self-healing renewal of a community store under controllable budget and time conditions. Our approach is to look directly at an ordinary house, observe and extract ordinary architectural elements from it.

The steel beams, rough escape doors, air conditioning machines, and fire hydrants added in previous modifications are marked with different color combinations; Restore the sealed windows, paint them yellow and add metal window panels that can be opened and closed, to make people re aware of the characteristics of this building and perceive the traces of time. The original simple escape steel staircase has also been preserved and exposed, painted green, with added details of railings and handrails.

Chaotic vitality and order

In the rectangular spaces on each floor, we have added precisely controlled diagonal and fold lines to form solid wood frames or metal sheds, breaking the monotony of a single form and enhancing the sense of instability in the space.. The solid wood frame wraps around the green staircase, with changing rooms and storage rooms or cash registers behind the folded lines, and hangers and wooden boards of the same module on the front, allowing for flexible adjustment of display combinations and contrasting with the slender stainless steel clothing poles on the other side of the wall. According to the brand positioning of each floor, the design of the first floor is simple and neat, corresponding to the clothing brand of its urban style; Add more material collages on the second floor, suitable for more neutral and diverse choices; On the third floor, the room was bathed in sunlight, and the outdoor clothing collection was displayed in a metal shed against the backdrop of green plants. Going up and down stairs, one can experience the continuous scene of each floor vertically through the wooden frame, with a combination of various materials and color coded architectural elements, making walking full of dynamics.

This is a design that pays tribute to disorder. A store in a community should not be a pure, awe inspiring gallery like space. We integrate multiple exhibition methods, making it look like a grocery store with a wide variety of products. Even if it is filled with clothes, it will not damage the space, but instead increase vitality and diversity.

Capturing the Life Atmosphere in Urban Gap Spaces

Around buildings, housing and shops are mixed together;
; The various messy clothes drying poles, air conditioning outdoor units, and canopies, like appendages growing on houses, are a typical and unique street living landscape in Shanghai. We attempt to respond to such urban crevice spaces by renovating the exterior of buildings. A metal frame hanging on the wall integrates the door openings and windows from the first to the third floor, maximizing lighting and visibility. The frame also supports the rain shelter and coffee window sill, while like a clothesline, it can transform and hang large posters and store name logos. Like a pigeon cage with a metallic sheen, it forms a recognizable facade feature that blends into residential buildings and complements each other.

The coffee window sill that grows from the internal space extends to the canopy to form an external display, combined with a lawn, affecting the interaction between the crowd and the store; The treatment of urban crevice spaces transforms shops into places with a lively atmosphere, while maintaining the quiet and ordinary state of the building, to integrate and update the atmosphere of the block.
