The tallest wooden high-rise building in Japan - Tetsuo Yamaji Architects designed a 12 story commercial complex along the Ginza Ohori dori in Tokyo. Among them, the top four floors are constructed with wooden structures, giving the entire steel structure a unique form resembling a "wooden box" placed on an office building. The ground and upper floors of the building are commercial spaces, while the middle floors are office and rental spaces. The underground section is made of reinforced concrete structure, with the first eight floors made of steel and the top four floors made of wood. The exterior and interior decoration are made of cedar wood from the Tama area of Tokyo.
日本最高的木结构高层建筑 - 在东京银座外堀通沿线,Tetsuo Yamaji Architects 设计了一座 12 层的商业综合体。其中,顶部四层采用木结构,使整个钢结构建筑呈现出如同“木盒子”置于办公楼上的独特形态。建筑底层与上层为商业空间,中部楼层为办公与租赁空间。地下部分采用钢筋混凝土结构,地上前八层为钢结构,顶部四层则采用木结构,外立面与室内装饰均选用东京多摩地区的雪松木材。

The building was completed in 2023 and officially opened in May 2024, becoming the tallest wooden high-rise building in Japan currently. Its height reaches 56 meters, surpassing the 55 meter high East Temple Five Pagoda built 380 years ago. Despite Japan's long-standing tradition of high-rise wooden buildings, the use of wooden structures in modern urban environments is still relatively limited. The completion of the Takagi Building marks Japan's official entry into the era of high-rise wooden structures. As a pioneer of this trend, this project also heralds the birth of more large-scale wooden structures in the future, such as the Mitsui Real Estate Nihonbashi office building (84 meters) planned to be completed in 2026 and the Tokyo Marine Nippon Group headquarters building (100 meters) to be completed in 2028. This milestone building propelled the rise of wooden structures in the urban landscape of Japan.

Exploring the multidimensional application of traditional Edo alleys and the rationality of wooden structures. The Ginza area still retains the street layout and townhouse style architecture of the Edo period to this day. The construction site of Takagi Building was originally the Kaga Shinkan, which was once the location of the "Candle" restaurant that writers such as Yasunari Kawabata and Yukio Mishima often visited. The design team has been hoping to recreate this historical site with wooden structures since the beginning of the project, and leveraging the development trend of wooden structures driven by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in recent years, utilizing local wood resources to create an iconic wooden structure building in the world-renowned Ginza area, setting a precedent in Japan's urban landscape.
传统江户巷弄的多维度运用与木结构合理性的探索。银座地区至今仍保留着江户时代的街巷格局与町屋式建筑。高木大厦的建造地原为有贺新馆,曾是作家川端康成、三岛由纪夫等人常去的“Candle”餐厅所在地。设计团队自项目初期便希望以木结构建筑重现这一历史场所,并借助近年来可持续发展目标(SDGs)推动下的木结构建筑发展趋势,利用本土木材资源,在世界知名的银座地区打造一座标志性木结构建筑,在日本的城市景观中开创先河。

At first, the design team had envisioned using an all wood structure, but faced many challenges in terms of fire resistance, structural stability, and cost. In the end, the team chose a hybrid structural solution that achieved optimal building efficiency while ensuring one hour fire resistance performance. The design also incorporates traditional Ginza alleyway elements and sets up open spaces on the upper level.
最初,设计团队曾设想采用全木结构,但在防火、结构稳定性及成本等方面面临诸多挑战。最终,团队选择了混合结构方案,在保证一小时耐火性能的前提下,实现了建筑效率的最优化。设计还融入了传统的银座传统巷弄元素,并在上层设置了开放空间。

Fireproof wooden structure design - The wooden structure of the upper four floors of the building adopts a continuous rigid frame system, with the facade facing the street. The column beam structure adopts COOL WOOD wood developed by Shelter company. The load-bearing components are covered with two layers of 21mm thick fire-resistant gypsum boards and 20mm thick wooden decorative materials to achieve a one hour fire resistance rating.
防火木结构设计 - 建筑上部四层的木结构部分采用连续刚性框架体系,立面朝向街道。柱梁结构采用由 Shelter 公司研发的 COOL WOOD 木材。承重构件外部包覆两层 21 毫米厚的耐火石膏板,并覆盖 20 毫米厚的木质饰面材料,使结构达到一小时耐火等级。

The key to fire prevention in wooden structures lies in the treatment of joints. In principle, fire-resistant wooden components require continuous cladding materials, so the design team adopted a pin connection method with embedded steel plates. This hybrid wood structure design does not require the use of existing certified construction methods provided by large construction companies, providing greater flexibility.
木结构建筑的防火关键在于接缝处理。原则上,耐火木构件需采用连续的覆层材料,因此设计团队采用了带嵌入式钢板的销钉连接方式。这种混合木结构设计无需采用由大型建筑公司提供的既有认证建造方法,有更大的灵活性。

Compared to traditional high-rise reinforced concrete buildings, the approval process for this structural system is more simplified and can be widely applied to many small and medium-sized multi tenant buildings in Japanese cities. The universal construction strategy of Gaomu Building is one of the important topics of this project, and it is hoped that it can provide a demonstration for more architects and developers to promote the widespread application of mixed wood structures in urban architecture.
相较于传统的高层钢筋混凝土建筑,该结构体系的审批流程更加简化,可广泛适用于日本城市中众多中小型多租户建筑。高木大厦的建造通用化策略正是本项目的重要课题之一,希望它能够为更多建筑师和开发商提供示范,推动混合木结构在城市建筑中的广泛应用。

The lignification of urban landscape - Tall wooden buildings demonstrate how to reshape the urban landscape through "modern wooden structure architecture". It bridges the gap between tradition and modernity by using local materials, promoting sustainable development and bringing new vitality to local forestry.

Japan has abundant forest resources, but the utilization rate is relatively low, with only 0.53% of the forest stock being developed annually. Promoting urban timber structure buildings is a key measure to achieve the 2050 carbon neutrality goal. This project used a total of 110 cubic meters of local wood, sequestered 65 tons of carbon dioxide, and reduced carbon emissions during material processing and transportation. As a pioneering building, the Takagi Tower not only reshapes Japan's urban skyline, but also lays the foundation for the development of sustainable architecture in the future, creating a closer connection between the city and the forest.
日本森林资源丰富,但利用率较低,每年仅开发 0.53% 的森林蓄积量。推动都市木结构建筑,是实现 2050 年碳中和目标的关键举措。本项目共使用了 110 立方米的本土木材,封存了 65 吨二氧化碳,同时减少了材料加工与运输过程中的碳排放。作为一座先锋建筑,高木大厦不仅重塑了日本的都市天际线,也为未来可持续建筑的发展奠定了基础,使城市与森林之间形成更紧密的联系。
