Wading Courtyard/Jimei Architecture

The quadrangle courtyard in Beijing is the most typical form of northern residential architecture, which has undergone more than 800 years of development and ultimately formed a strict spatial settlement of quadrangle courtyards. After liberation, it gradually became a "social" residence, without hierarchical connections. Different families living in the same courtyard shared the same yard and alley. These public spaces did bring residents closer, but also deprived them of privacy, and even many basic necessities of life could not be guaranteed.

The project is a discussion between the owner and designer on a new residential model for Beijing courtyard houses. Although the project area is not large, the owner hopes that the project still has the ability to accommodate themselves and friends simultaneously, and even the extra rooms can be rented out for a long time. A "group living" lifestyle like Friends requires a shared living room space where everyone can engage in activities and dine together, while also having their own living unit.

The building to be renovated is a standard one in one courtyard, located in Tianqiao Chuziying Hutong. Through the placement of structures and roofs, the design blurs the boundaries between the original courtyard, interior, and exterior. The newly created courtyard blends with the interior space, bringing natural scenery and ample air and natural light to the interior.

The design divided and erected the original courtyard space, and a "pigeon cage" grew from the eaves, breaking out of the original roof. The new space erected on this "tile sea" is completely free from social attributes and belongs to a natural independent space for personal dialogue. Pushing open the 'skylight' feels like climbing to the roof of the house, but still inside. Part of the original building's tiled roof has also extended into the interior. Just like the place where Li Tianran and Guan Qiaohong meet in 'Evil Never Suppresses Righteousness', the roof of a Beijing quadrangle courtyard is a rare place within the city walls where freedom, romance, and everything can be emptied.

The newly built 'pigeon cage' is erected on the roof with pure geometric shapes. Visually interweaving with the original roof, the green brick gable walls and tiles are wrapped inside the room. The skylight glass surface on the roof is equipped with semi transparent blackout curtains to filter sunlight into softer light. This series of treatments blurs the distinction between indoor and outdoor spaces, contrasts and similarities between modern and traditional architecture, creates a lively and warm atmosphere, and makes the relationship between new and old ambiguous. The suspended 'pigeon cage' is constructed with a steel structure, detached from the brick and wood structure of the building. The clear structural relationship allows the original wooden structure to be exposed.

The location of the restaurant bar spans two spaces on the west side of the square and the west wing. The design visually distinguishes the newly built ear canal from the existing square through materials. White terrazzo and green bricks divide the space into two parts, black and white, smooth and rough, simple and complex, creating a contrast in height, texture, facade material, and spatial differentiation.
