Katayanoken Pier is an all solid wood office and hotel building that showcases the infinite possibilities of wooden architecture in a sensitive urban environment. As the first directly connected new building in the iconic seaside urban landscape of Helsinki, located in the former industrial area of Katajanken, Katajanken Pier leads the transformation of this embankment into a city space open to the public. It continues the unified neoclassical silhouette of Helsinki's southern seaside, while its winding and twisting front face breaks the scale of this silhouette, connecting it with the diverse and layered architectural complex on the Katajanken Peninsula. The front face of the building adopts a double-layer structure, with the outer layer made of glass, aluminum, and granite, protecting the exposed wooden structure from the influence of marine climate, while integrating the building with the urban landscape, giving it a unique personality, and displaying different styles with the change of day and night and the four seasons.

The building has four floors above ground and features a publicly accessible green rooftop terrace, as well as a basement that includes technical facilities and parking. The building is designed as the new headquarters of Stora Enso, a leading forestry company in Northern Europe, with half of it occupied by hotels. The street level space is connected to both sides of the surrounding city and features spacious, shared open halls, restaurants, cafes, and meeting spaces. The structural system and spatial design ensure that the internal space has maximum flexibility and adaptability during long-term use. The exposed spruce structure and carefully designed spruce and ash details showcase the natural diversity of wood as a building material. Interior design focuses on materials that are natural, sustainable, and increasingly beautiful over time. In addition to wood, the Vitasari grey granite used for the exterior walls and indoor and outdoor flooring also tightly connects the building to the urban environment. The outdoor space of the building is inspired by the natural scenery of Northern Europe, with birch forests in the courtyard and an archipelago style grassland on the roof.

The project aims to minimize climate impacts and fully utilize renewable resources and materials throughout its long-term lifecycle. The above ground structure of the building adopts standard, industrialized, and prefabricated Stora Enso large-sized wooden products, which are tailored for pioneering structural and architectural solutions. The beam column frame and facade structure are made of laminated veneer lumber (LVL) produced by Valkos, Finland. The interior walls, elevator shafts, stairwells, floor slabs, and roof structures used for structural reinforcement are made of Cross Layered Timber (CLT) produced in Grovon, Sweden. The entire framework consists of 7600 cubic meters of spruce and 2500 wooden components.

Due to its proximity to the sea, extensive flood prevention measures have been implemented as part of the construction project. As the first redeveloped block on the Katajanokan waterfront, this plot leads the revival, reinforcement, and elevation of the entire embankment. It paves the way for the permanent reconstruction of the embankment from Market Square to the tip of Katajanokon as a continuous public space in the future.
