Over the years, Medellin, especially the Provenza district, has become one of the important centers of Colombia's tourism industry. Architects not only need to create value from an aesthetic perspective, but also from an environmental and social perspective.

The birth of El Zarso Hotel originated from a response to local hotel demand, not just to provide more rooms to the tourism industry. Through this project, the design team aims to create a small oasis in the city. The project is located in the Provenza district, close to other important and well-known hotels both domestically and internationally. The huge challenge for the design team was to find a unique element, so they chose to design a boutique hotel with very few rooms, paying attention to details and always striving to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere in all spaces.

The hotel has seven floors, distributed as follows: the basement on the first floor meets all technical needs, the first floor has a restaurant and lobby, the fourth floor is for guest rooms, and there is also a rooftop terrace with a bar. The bar is inspired by a retro style, thanks to a retractable fabric sunshade that can be open or closed, allowing the space to adapt to different activities over time. Due to the building being located between two adjacent walls, natural ventilation and lighting of the space can only be achieved through the east and west facades.

The design team started from the premise of placing the hotel's service areas (such as shafts, elevators, and stairs) on one side of adjacent walls to maximize the use of the facade and ensure that each room has direct access to the outside. The first and last floors of the project are spaces open to the city, featuring a restaurant and a bar, not only for hotel guests but also open to the public. The spacious facade frames different scenery; The windows on each floor are unique, incorporating arches and porticos to enrich the interior space. From indoors, each window offers a view of a garden, and further away, the city and mountains.

In this project, the design team used the highest quality materials and carefully integrated vegetation to make the building an additional connection point in the urban ecological network. The slate has become a vast container that accommodates over 100 tropical species. A well-designed drip irrigation system provides the necessary and minimal amount of water to this small ecosystem in a reasonable and efficient manner.

This renovation also helps to maintain thermal comfort inside the building, reduce the demand for air conditioning, and thus lower the building's carbon footprint. Through the El Zarso Hotel, the design team strives to create an architectural work that meets current needs while considering environmental factors, aiming to have a positive impact on the city and future projects.
