Hotel Rakuragu, No matter how small, there must be a balcony/small or large building
Hotel Rakuragu,

The project is located in Nihonbashi, Tokyo, surrounded by typical mixed use buildings in Tokyo. The site does not have a panoramic view like Jingshengdi, and the surrounding buildings lack a unified design logic in terms of height, width, material, and opening form. In order to break the negative factor of "narrow urban land use", the design team focuses on the gaps between urban buildings and takes the penetration of vision as the design theme. On this small piece of land with only 84 square meters, we need to create 14 guest rooms within a limited space.

The surrounding buildings are disorderly and lack unified standards. Unlike common hotels, designers observe the urban texture and set balconies with different orientations for each room, allowing guests to experience the city from different angles. The final building is like a randomly carved white cube, with a rhythmic facade. The plane axis network X1-X4 is vertically connected to optimize the structural economy. After adjusting the end single span structure (axis number X4-X5), three balcony styles are formed, balancing functionality and facade aesthetics. The balcony adopts Low-E glass, with insulation in summer and winter, combined with natural ventilation design, balancing openness and comfort. During the pandemic, the design emphasized the integration of indoor and outdoor elements, allowing guests to still perceive natural light and urban atmosphere in enclosed spaces.
The building adopts a steel frame structure with slant support to replace the traditional column beam system. Flexible arrangement of columns ensures unobstructed view of the balcony. Facade balconies come in various forms, some forming triangles, while others cover the entire room. The column beam section is extremely small (beam height 300mm, column diameter 150-200mm), hidden inside the wall, allowing natural light to diffuse evenly along the curved wall surface. The curved wall of the guest room extends to the outside, blurring the boundaries between the inside and outside, creating a sense of spaciousness.
The seamless space and curved walls form the tone of the guest room. The microporous texture of diatomaceous earth wallpaper and the curved wall scatter light together, softening the indoor atmosphere. The bathroom layout balances privacy and comfort: the shower area is far away from the opening, and the washbasin is moved outward to avoid feeling cramped. This design is particularly important in densely populated office environments in the central district.

Small and large buildings are centered around "balconies" and form iconic images through differentiated design, while corresponding to diverse types of guest rooms. The project uses a lightweight strategy to resolve spatial limitations, reflecting Japan's small-scale design wisdom and providing guests with an immersive Tokyo experience.
