Tokyo Mitsutsuji Building/Dacheng Construction

This wooden main hall was rebuilt in the late Edo period (1808) and miraculously survived the war of the Osaka air raid in 1945, when many wooden buildings were destroyed. Because of this, the artistic treasures of the beautiful Edo era, which were born more than a century ago, in the hall have been preserved intact: colorful flower murals and carved beams and painted rafters complement each other, and the Buddha statues with gold foil decoration, lacquer painting and seven treasure painting are solemn and quiet, still blooming the brilliant charm of the past.

To ensure that the main hall of Sanjin Temple, which has always been the core of faith, continues to fulfill its religious function for the next fifty to a hundred years, this project has decided to construct a new building to fully protect the main hall of Sanjin Temple. For this purpose, the main hall building underwent three stages of overall translation and was ultimately embedded into a three story high atrium colonnade structure, achieving an organic integration of traditional space and modern protective system.

By efficiently utilizing the vertical space above the main hall, the project has successfully created a new urban temple model that coexists with hotels and shops. This design not only preserves the main hall building in its entirety, but also relies on the golden location advantage of Yutangjin Avenue to explore a sustainable path for temple operations - breaking away from the dependence on donations from a single believer and providing innovative samples for the modern transformation of religious sites.

The planning scheme clearly requires that the entrances and exits of temples and hotels should be located along Yutangjin Avenue. The design team believes that attracting passersby to stop and participate on this main road is the key to maintaining continuous interaction with the local community. Based on this, the project proposes the design concept of "Open Mitsutera", creating a three story atrium colonnade space within the temple site - a fully open space to the public that will become a window for integrating Buddhism into daily life. At the same time, there is also a dedicated welcome entrance within the temple site, allowing hotel guests to directly enter this composite space that combines religious and public attributes.

The hotel takes "Gleaming Brightly" as its brand core, and its spiritual core resonates deeply with the lacquer and gold foil decoration in the main hall. This solemn space, constructed with vermilion lacquer decoration and gold foil pasting, is a concrete presentation of the flow of radiance. In addition, the lighting design team enhances the majestic atmosphere of the main hall through the narrative of light and shadow, allowing the warm golden color of the Buddhist dome and the modern light environment of the hotel lobby to permeate each other, ultimately creating an immersive field where time and space overlap - here, the Zen spirit of the millennium old temple blends with contemporary living aesthetics, achieving a subtle balance between traditional architectural textures and avant-garde design language.

In the temple site, traditional religious rituals such as "Gomataki" (a Buddhist ritual where believers burn small wooden branches in front of the Buddha to pray for divine protection) are regularly held, and a diverse cultural space is also opened up - academic lectures, live concerts, and various themed exhibitions take place here in rotation. The hotel has specially designed an immersive experience path for guests: when the morning light first appears, guests can participate in morning classes and recite sutras with the monks, and feel the rhythm of the ancient temple's morning bell amidst the sound of chanting; In the afternoon, you can also listen to the clear music of the shakuhachi in the tea room of the corridor, allowing Zen and modern travel experiences to achieve subtle resonance in the interweaving of time and space.
